Hops trellis

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Here's some sneak peeks at what's going to (maybe) go up. Whose friggin idea was it to build a 17' trellis? Oy.

I always have to post pix of my dog, Abby.

First time using the camera timer! Once I got that first "test post" in and walked away from it, Abby went apesh*t barking at it... hilarious.

And... like the idiot I am... I planned everything down to the smallest detail... but forgot I have only a 12' ladder. Ugh.

I cut 2' off the height, so now the top of the "long rails" (where the hops rope connects to) will be 14' off the ground (instead of 16'), which should work with the tallest ladder at the local WalMart... besides, I don't think 2' less of height is gonna upset the hops too much. :-)

And with some help from the mighty guns of my kickass g/f, we got the sides up... the rails will go up prolly Wednesday morning.. maybe Tuesday night after work.

Awesome :)

I wonder if I'd need council approval for a trellis that high...

Good work.....Again brewmcq, Growing hops is great. I wouldn't worry about the couple of feet, my trellis is around the same height. You can cut the growing tip when it reaches the top (which it will) and you'll get a heap of lateral shoots growing.
Cheers

Looks like a great growing area.

Is it big enough?

Mine is 8m long and next year I will need another 4 meters for my growing stock.

Cheers, all!

@Stux... I'm running on the assumption I don't need any sort of approval... besides, as you can see from the pictures, our yard is completely enclosed with trees and hedges... keep your fingers crossed for me. :-)

@BoC... no airports nearby!! ;-)

@Wiz... agreed. I'm a little cranky that I could have built something the same size withe shorter pieces of wood for less money, but oh well. Brewing is a hobby in which you just throw away money in a hole in a pot.. or in this case, a hole in the ground. ;-)

@hashie... I hope it's big enough. I've got 3' between plants (I know 4'-5' is recommended) to save a little money on the materials for the raised bed. I'll use tomato cages to keep the plants on the ground better "controlled", and, of course, I'm stringing them up in a "V" shape... we'll find out, I reckon. :-)

Outstanding! Just the inspiration I need. I have my first rhizomes - POR and Chinook - in the crisper waiting to go in. Trellis to follow....

Good luck with your hops. Mine are 4 foot high already and we have a frost advisory for tomorrow night! They take frost but damn it's almost June and we still are fighting freezing temps! It is really easy to grow hops and they are ornamental to boot. I just grow enough for one (wet hop) hop bomb. Welcome to the hop growing cult!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV
