My 1st BIAB!

Well I've been brewing all grain for a while (10 years!) with a 3 tier system and I have just been fascinated with this BIAB technique. I am a firm believer in "simpler is better" and couldn't wait to try it.

I seem to have read so much on BIAB that I didn't retain a bit of it and just decided to plow through it with my own experimentation! So yesterday I decided to establish a baseline of how well this will work. My recipe for an english bitter:

5 lbs 2 Row Malt
1 lbs 40 Crystal
8 oz corn sugar
1 oz EKG pellet (5% AAU)
.5 oz Fuggle pellet
Expected gravity: 1038
Measured gravity: 1030

Mashed in at 155 F for 90 minutes. Hop additions at 60 minutes and 30 minute boil.

Fermenting happily away at 68 F with Nottingham yeast. Color is EXCELLENT.

Comments: Ok I knew better and should have used more grain. I do this all the time with my 3 tier system anyway, but I wanted to strictly by the recipe and see where I'd land. I'm very pleased with the gravity and think it will be a fine tasting beer.

Next step: investigating no-chill!

Ouch, I've got a crick in my neck from looking at your photo :)

Another 3v convert, woo hoo!

The biggest problem I see with BIAB, is that it is so simple. Lot's of people believe you can only make good beer with a complicated process. Not so!

Nice work opalco! :salute: As you've noted it is a very simple process and as hashie relates, this lack of complexity does not mean the end results shouldn't impress. Rusted- on 3Vers may care to take note!
WRT the recipe, yes, it could've been a bigger grain bill for a standard batch, but seeing as this is a baseline experiment, you should be able to adapt it upward- the bag and kettle both look to be more than large enough.

nice work opalko.
i would like to here of you no-chill experience. as i have only ever no-chilled and get much grief over this from other brewers i'd like to here from a chiller what he thinks of no-chill.
Cube:
fermenter: Sourdough Spelt Ale, Classic Lambic, Oud Brune, Barrel Aged Belgian Dubbel
Kegs: Bob's Black IPA, Blanc Blond, Soda...

Sorry about the orientation of the photo, looked correct on my computer but somehow messed up when I uploaded. I'll let you know about no-chill as soon as I get some kind of bucket or container to try it in. For this batch I used my homemade counterflow chiller which works great to cool the wort down, but is a hassle to sanitize. I'll let you know how it all works out..this is great! Cheers
