Grain mill

Post #1 made 14 years ago
Looking at getting a grain mill. Tossing up between the monster mill 2 and 3 roller 1.5 inch models. As grain crush not quite as important with BIAB ( no stuck sparges) would a 2 roller be fine or would I be better off with the 3 ?

cheers

Sean

I think you're right, the crush is not as important so go for the 2 roller

I would suggest stainless steel, because then you'll never have to deal with rust or oiling

I envy you Sean, sailing and brewing, what a life.

The difference between a 2 roller and a 3 roller mill is, with a 3 roller you only need to pass the grain through the mill once (effectively getting a double crush). With a 2 roller you may need to put it through twice if the crush is too course.

PS I purchased the MM2 1.5" with SS Rollers and 1/2" Drive Shaft :)

And the hopper

The hopper is actually fantastic, all grain self-feeds without getting stuck!

I run it on a .9mm width and it seems to work very well, I only single crush, but I have not thoroughly experimented with crush yet

Got to finish building the bugger yet, hopefully just another year of being itchy. Long time cruisers say cruising is doing boat maintenance in exotic locations !
It's the cruising that actually got me back into brewing after @ 20 year break. Couldn't figure out how to store enough wine aboard, besides a cold beer (especially your own )is better in warmer climates. Not sure if we will go all the way @ or hang @ the pacific/asia, Just have to be back when the kids get to high school age (they are 3 and 5 now).

That is the one I'm looking at, was going to make my own hopper out of carbon fibre ( bling factor) will buy their one and might use it for a mould. Will get the handle as well just in case drill dies.

I've used a couple of hundred kilos of carbon so far on the boat, do you think the government might give me some carbon credits ?

Remember the handle is incompatible with the 1/2" drive option
