A question on BBH's Imperial Calculator

Post #1 made 15 years ago
I really appreciate all the answers Ive received to my questions. Someday maybe I can actually contribute ;)

Here is another question. BrickBrewHouse was kind enough to provide me with a copy of the calculator that has Gallons, Ounces and such. Ive had a chance to play around and get a feel for how it works, very cool! I'm math/computer and spreadsheet challenged, but I think Ive got it. If I wanted to brew up a batch of Amarillo APA for instance. Id start with.....

1. How much beer I want to end up with after fermentation.
2. Pot dimentions.
3. The recipe including: Starting Gravity, Grain bill with amounts, hops with amounts and times.

If I understand correctly, I can plug ingredients and amounts from this APA recipe into this calculator, and the calculator will adjust volumes of water, grain, and hops for my setup, and final amounts.

Am I doing it correctly?

I can't remember which calculator of mine you're using, I believe it's this one. If so, then...

Yep. You'll have to adjust the "Brew Length" in liters (Cell B5 in Volumes etc.). You'll probably have to adjust in small increments until you see the converted Brew Length in gallons approximately equal to what you're looking for.

Actually none of the other calculations are based on this cell so it's not imperative to change this. What's more important is to adjust the evaporation rate.

Yep. And you'll also want the percent alpha acid (AA%) for the scaled recipe and the grams/AA% or IBUs for the original recipe (IBU's is easier if the original recipe gives this).

Sounds like you got it though. If you upload the spreadsheet once you have it finished we'll be happy to give it a look.

Good work

Thanks BBH!

I just found out about Brewmate as well. Im going to keep messing around with these programs; Ill get this figured out yet. This Brewing stuff is kind like fly fishing. Its got its own language. Listening to a couple of addicts is like hearing a different language. Time to study up :geek: .

Just ask PP about terminology and you might get a long rant :P But I agree, the terminology can be confusing/daunting/misleading, everything that brewers should try to avoid. I really appreciate the efforts that BIABrewer.info has taken to keep terminology consistent. I think if you study up on the terminology used on this forum, you'll find that everyone does a good job at keeping things clear. I think this stems from the work folks have done in creating the original Calculator and defining each step of the brewing process.
