For sure, download that BIABacus file and fill it out. Link is above. It will tell you recommended levels for everything. (You will need the diameter & height of your pot, etc.). See what it says and tells you can be done with your existing system.

In the BIABacus, put the "Recipe" (for fermentable malts & hops) on the Left hand side (section on the left as well), and on the Right hand side, is the "what you will use" section). Usually conventional 3 vessel brewing, most recipes designed with batch sparging will estimate around 75% Efficiency into Boil. We normally are getting in the low to mid 80s with full volume BIAB, when mashed and boiled for 90 minutes each. So shouldn't be a surprise that the BIABacus will normally tell you to dial back the ingredients a bit from the recipe (since full volume BIAB is more efficient). Also with the "what you will use", you can type in a different hop type, for example. May not be the best explanation... Anyhow, go ahead and fill out a BIABacus file and see what kind of questions you have. If not clear and questions, see if there are already answers your questions...at least some of them. If not, start a new post over in the regular BIAB for New Brewers section - http://www.biabrewer.info/viewforum.php?f=5. Give a good description & best possible explanation, and post a copy of your BIABacus file. One (or multiple) of us will be along to help point you in the right direction!

Understand you are looking to do Mini BIAB. Correct? There are guys here that do lots of that. (Not me, I produce 5 Gallon batches, around 20 liters normally). Seems like larger batches would be much more Efficient - once you discover you Enjoy the brewing process, and if you actually Drink enough of your beer to justify it - you may want to Expand the operation. ;) With not much more time you get much more beer. But no problem with doing it small with Mini BIAB if you want too (either just to start and try it, or into the future as well...).

Not sure what a Grainfather is... Is it what we would call a grain mill...? If so, where I live I can easily source the grain and grind it at local home brew shops... If this was more difficult or increasingly expensive I may purchase my own grain mill.
Variation is the key here :yum: I don't want to drink the same beer for months :nup:
And a grainfather isn't some sort of mill, it's something like a brauwmeister, have a look here http://www.grainfather.com/#!home/mainPage

Goesting - You just need a BIGGER beer refrigerator... I can fit 6 each 5-gallon Corney Kegs in the fridge with outside taps for 4 each (leaving room for 2 kegs to lager...while connected to CO2). Life is good, very good! :smoke: And drink plenty of local microbrews for more variation...

Hi there ,
this is my first post ... Is it correct that it is a 'reply' in this forum ?

To introduce myself ...
Tanukimugenbeer (David) here , a hoppy ale loving kiwi living in Japan , a land of light lagers .
In Japanese , tanuki is a racoon , mugen in infinte , and beer is beer .

I've very little brewing experience
( helping a friend 4 batches , real grain , stovetop , sparging method )
It surprised me how long it took and how labour intensive it was for 18 litres of fairly good beer .

Then I drank some really excellent BIAB beer in NewZealand , and have made the decision to start brewing . Your site came highly recommended by those NZ brewers , so sign me up please !!!

Welcome to the show tanukimmugenbeer ,

This is the right forum to introduce yourself and your post above is great ;).

The Kiwis adopted BIAB early on and so know BIAB well. And, they have some excellent hops!

Info on the current site can be a little hard to find so if you have any questions, jump in and ask. There's a few other brewers in Japan so, soon it might be able to pool your resources so as you can have better access to grains and hops.

Will look forward to hearing of your progress,
PP

P.S. Am currently reading the John Rain novels by Barry Eisler, set in Tokyo - great stuff!
If you have found the above or anything else of value on BIABrewer.info, consider supporting us by getting some BIPs!

Hey Supernaut72,
Welcome aboard. Definetely plenty to learn on the site and plenty of help available. Keep mining the site and ask questions - only way to learn.
Nice ace of spades! Wouldn't happen to be a black Sabbath fan or so? "I've seen the future and I've left it behind"
Look forward to your brew stories.

Hows-it-goin. I'm from Central QLD in Australia. I've been all grain brewing using my BIAB set up since about 2011. I use a 50L keg with 3/4 inch tap, 3 ring gas burner, mash master grain bag, and I cube. I have only just started using BIABicus and have got a lot to learn. Can I get some answers to some questions?

- The only way I've found to reach my recipes OG and FG in biabicus is by setting kettle efficiency to 68% in cell x. After I did, my acutal OG & FG have been matching estimated OG & FG on the past 3 recipes. Is this the best way to adjust your recipes to suit biabicus?
- I've got etchings on the inside of my keg marking the 5L increments. How can I use cell S & T to get better volume measurements?

I like keeping it simple, I don't want to sparge or do anything more elaborate than hoisting the bag out of the keg and squeezing it. Still learning how to adjust Biabicus to suit my system.

I've never tried to clone a commercial beer before, but I came across the Brew Dog - DIY dog back catalogue. Do these recipes have integrity? I've attached the recipe but just in case I've typed it out below:
Punk IPA.jpg
The recipe reads:
Volume (assumption is VIF) 20L
Boil Volume (assumption is VIB) 25L
ABV 5.6%
Target FG 1011
Target OG 1053
EBC 15
SRM 7.6
PH 4.4
Attenuation Level 78%
Malt:
Extra Pale 4.38kg 9.6lb
Caramalt 0.25kg 0.55lb
Hops: (dry hop post ferm for 5days @ 14 deg.)
Chinook 20g start
Ahtanum 12.5g start
Chinook 20g middle
Ahtanum 12.5g middle
Chinook 27.5 end
Ahtanum 12.5g end
Nelson Sauvin end
Chinook 47.5 DH
Ahtanum 37.5g DH
Simcoe 37.5g DH
Nelson Sauvin DH
Cascade 37.5g DH
Amarillo 10 DH

Mash temp 66 deg C or 152 F
Ferm temp 19 deg C or 66 F
Yeast Wyeast 1056

Looking forward to learning more about our way of brewing. I'm sure I'll have more questions and post the more I learn about BIABicus.

Party on :peace:

Hey McLeod,

Welcome to the forum!

After the introduction on this page you will want to post questions like this on the BIAB for new Brewers page... Go ahead and start a new post by clicking New Topic at the top, and use a good title that explains what you are asking, and then give as much detail as possible. Here is a link. http://www.biabrewer.info/viewforum.php?f=5 We really like to keep questions like these contained like that to their own posting so it is easier for others to find them and provide assistance, also easier to find later on. Thanks!

Some quick answers... ;) For your EIB (Efficiency Into Boil, which some call Kettle Efficiency) if it is only 68%, that seems really low. I'm normally in the 80s on most beers. (It can vary a bit by beer style though and I've had it over 90%). Would need to know a little more about your process, your BIAB bag, etc. I would not make any adjustments to the BIABacus until you have several BIABs under your belt and know for certain it isn't a fluke. Are you doing 90 minute mash and boil like most of us here would recommend or cutting it short and hoping it works well enough? You will want to attach a copy of your BIABacus too. For sure start a new thread as discussed and we will try to help.

Again, welcome to the forum!

Hi all! New to the site, and relatively new to brewing. Excited to learn about all things BIAB! Copying the format from others:

1. Where are you from?
Costa Mesa, CA

2. How did you stumble across the site?
Recommendation from thread on homebrewtalk.com

3. What you think of it so far?
Neat! Wondering if it will work on my iPhone.

4. Have you brewed at all before. If so, for how long and what method are you currently using?
4 1-gallon extract batches so far. Researching BIAB now, and excited!

5. Do you work? Are you retired or maybe you run a household?
I'm CTO of a medical device startup.

cheers!

1. I'm from Akron, OHIO
2. Came across this site through countless hours of googling how to properly BIAB.
3. I enjoy reading this forum occasionally, when I have time... I'm still trying to figure out the perfect water to grain ratio for BIAB.
4. I've only done all-grain prior to BIAB, which is what I've been doing as of late.
5. I work at one of the top 100 breweries in the world, in Akron, OH.

Welcome aboard dcuccia and b33rpr0n. Here's the drill (joshua's regular welcome message):
You can Download "BIABACUS" at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1869,
and get "The BIABacus - Help" at http://biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=1863, since you will probably need it,
and read the "Clear Brewing Terminology (CBT)" viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2685 to Understand the Terms used in BIABACUS.

OK, the BIABacus is a big ol' Excel spreadsheet and may not work well on the small screen of an iPhone, if at all. However, it is an excellent guide for brewing the BIAB way. Read lots of the forum threads and give the BIABacus a go. Then post your BIABacus file on a thread and ask questions, you will get answers.

dcuccia - look for mini BIAB info in the search box on this site.

b33rpr0n - Do you mean that where you work in Akron is one of the top 100 breweries, or Akron has 100 breweries and they are all tops?

Hi there, my name is Cameron, I am based in Perth, Western Australia.

Stumbled across this site when i was google searching BIAB. Found a fair bit of useful information on it.
I have been brewing for about 6 months - extract and steeped grains and only partial boil however I have now bought a new brew kettle and will be stepping into BIAB full volume
When I'm not brewing, I am a sales manager at a Subaru dealership. I have a fiance and 11 year old daughter and play amateur soccer as a keeper.

Looking forward to getting involved!

Hello Camhill, and welcome to the forum!

We BIABers from North America often assume that ALL Aussie home brewers do BIAB, since the BIAB pioneers all came from there, and it is by far so obviously the best way for home brewers to brew whole grain beer! Easier with less equipment... (Seems "common sense..."). It's spread to many of us in other parts of the world as well, and is easily the fastest growing brewing style in the world!

Let me know if you need help downloading the BIABacus file, or any trouble finding the terminology page. Or if there are any other questions.

Hello all, Jim here from Clearwater, Florida.

Married for 14 years but no kids, just dogs and cats.
I have worked as tech support for Apple for the last
three years.

Was serving as a Navy combat medic when I was
introduced to home brewing by a marine friend and helped
him out a few times.
On my own I have only done extract brewing. Started
with Mr Beer about two years ago but did not brew
steadily, just off and on for probably 5 batches
total.

Want to get into all grain but not interested in all
of the equipment and time required by traditional all
grain brewing techniques and thought biab sounded just
like what I needed! so here I am ready to learn from
what looks to be a wonderful resource.

Thanks to those who have worked hard to make this site
available.

Hi zeno and welcome aboard! You are correct about Biab, its a great way to brew all grain with less equipment, which also means less cleaning. This translates to a shorter brew day, for the same great all grain brew. Let us know if you have questions, lots of friendly brewers here, and check out the biabacus if you haven't yet. it looks daunting at first but it is truly a great tool for Biab.

Happy Brewing!
