OldGoatBrewing RV Adventures Blog

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Awhile ago PistolPatch recommended that I begin posting our (my wife and I) adventures while we travel the States in our RV. I have started a blog (sorry...pretty new at this, so it will take me awhile to get it looking like a professional blog) and wanted to post the link to the site. The first post is actually a beer I brewed a couple months ago. We are still in the same spot in Virginia Beach, but will be travelling again soon. I plan to brew next either in July (Iowa) or August (Michigan International Speedway). I will post a link when that happens.

If anyone has any recommendations, please don't hesitate to let me know. I am VERY new at this. (Blogging, not brewing)

Hi OldGoat,

Have been wondering what you're up to...

How did your Trailer Trash Ale turn out? I see its based on your Honey Cream Ale that you've talked about.

Safe travels...

Hey Scott. Trailer Trash came out very good. Only problem was that there wasn't enough of it! I really cut down on the batch size due to my kettle...but since then have learned how to increase the size by using section W of the BIABacus. Holding water back from the mash and adding just prior to the boil has allowed me to get the full 5.5 gallons into the fermenter.

We are in Maryland for a few days visiting some local craft breweries, then on to Iowa where i will be brewing the next batch. As soon as we can get some high speed internet again,i will be updating the blog with a lot of adventures.

Talk to you soon.

Hey Old Goat ! I was wondering where you put the fermenter when I read your post. Can't wait for the Michigander brew. Wife is from Detroit and 2 of her nephews up there brew also. I'll be following along .

So the light (UV) obviously does not have a negative effect on the beer...? Or is it shaded enough? How about fermentation temperatures (summer in particular)?

Only reason I ask, these are things I've been working hard on over the past few years with BIAB and other things in making better beer... The whole thing of brewing in an RV is a bit more challenging it seems...interesting though too. Reminds me of a Brew Dogs episode. :-)

Are you bottling, or kegging?

The website for the conical (google fastferment) says that it blocks about 97% of UV light. But i keep the shades down while fermenting (except when i took the picture apparently...).

We keep the RV at 65-70 degrees at all times anyway, so that works for fermentation and also for conditioning.

I condition/carbonate in a keg for 2 to 4 weeks then bottle from the keg.

For anyone who might be interested, I have changed the website for my blog. I am still inwork in making it a "real" blog, but it is better than the last one. I don't always have decent internet while on the road, so the entries are going to be a little spotty. However, there are a couple new entries on it now in case you want to check it out. (I am still in work on allowing people to "follow" the blog and to make comments on it as well...I am a computer idiot in this area.)

Blogsite: oldgoatbrews.com

I will be brewing next week in a cornfield in Iowa and the following month at Michigan International Speedway. I will try to get those posted as soon as possible. In addition, I am posting the craft breweries we visit. ( I have a couple to catch up on already...)

Thanks for looking.

You won't be too far from me when you hit Michigan, I live just north of Sault Ste Marie Ontario, just across the boarder from Sault Ste Marie Michigan. Beautiful country up here around Lake Superior :)
