My first BIAB

Post #1 made 11 years ago
A picture of my first BIAB. Dr Smurto's Golden Ale. Although I have a good turkey fryer base, I wanted to try my Volcano Grill. It is only 15K BTU, but on the plus side, a breeze doesn't affect the flame nearly as much...no shield needed. Took about 50 minutes to take the mash water from 55 to 158F. And then another 20 minutes to get it to boil after the mash. All-in-all, a good first BIAB.

No pic old goat!

I always offer this advice, see if you missed anything?

To post a picture you need to reply to the post. Then if you look below where you type your text you will see an area called "upload attachment".
under "filename" click the "browse" button. Navigate to where the file is stored on your PC. Select it then click "open".
The filename will now appear next to the browse button.
Below this is a "file comment" box which you can type in to add text/description of your picture etc.
To the left of this is a box "add the file", click on this and the file will be uploaded to the BIABrewer server (nearly finished now)!

You should see the file has been added to the list below where you just typed. You should also see in the "attachments" line directly below your main text the file you just added with a button "place inline"

Navigate back to your main text, and click the place inline button where you want the picture to be located (beginning/end/between text) etc.

Click on preview button to ensure you have correctly detailed what you want, then either correct or submit.

Mally,

Thanks much. First forum I have ever joined...having trouble navigating.

At any rate, pic attached.

That looks great Old Goat ;). Never seen a burner like that before - excellent! Hope you had a bit of fun on the day .

Was that the grain bag I saw you mention elsewhere that is too coarse? Pics are never that great for being able to see whther a bag is too coarse or too fine.

:peace:

Yep. That's the bag. It was advertised at the HB supply as being coarse, but they didn't have any fine bags to compare with...and it looked pretty fine to me. Oh well....next time.

Since I live in our RV, I am pretty pressed for space. So I scale back wherever I can. The volcano (Google search will pop up in top results) collapses to approximately 6" tall and I can use charcoal, wood, or propane to grill. This is the first time I've connected the propane. But this is perfect (albeit a little slow) for brewing on the road.

Hi OldGoat,

That is an interesting looking burner arrangement...

If you end up needing a new brew bag - and you are in one location long enough to receive a shipment - I bought mine from biab-brewing.com (from Canada). Got their deluxe bag with Velcro straps. Great bag, and they were great to work with (even answering a question on Christmas, when they were on vacation...). That's not to say you can't get a good bag elsewhere, but they are top-tier, and I was very pleased all the way around...

Thanks for that info OG. I had never heard of these. Sounds superb in its versatility. Wow!

Goat

Just finished my first BIAB. While I was waiting for it to warm up a bit outside, I put two 16L pots on the stove on low and heated 5G/20L of water to about 175°F. When I was ready to start brewing, I just dumped the water into my kettle and added two more gallons to get me to my target volume / temperature.

Saved quite a bit of propane and time.
