I need to get a larger pot to get biabing and wandered what size i would need, I was initially going to get a 33l thermos pot from mrlard but he said this is really only for mashing in as it repels heat to certain extent.

So i only want to end up with 13.5 litres in my fv and am not really interested in 'BIG' beers, i know a lots of people argue that the bigger the pot the better , but i've been doing these amounts for extract for the last 2 years and have found it a good amount for me, i generally brew hoppy apa's around 5%

As i understand it i want as little headspace as possible in my pot as this will help to maintain a steady temperature whilst mashing. I was also going to make a sleeve for my pot from that insulated foil bubble wrap stuff, then make a 'bag' from the same stuff to surround around the lot.

From this beer Beer engine read out it looks like i could just use a 20l pot but not sure if this accounts for any losses (trub, evaporation etc) i still cant really get to grips with biabacus, but know i will need to.

An example of a recent extract recipe i'd like to use for my first biab is here, i'd replace the extract with some marris otter

Baikinman,

For a Quick Response, BIAB needs a Kettle, Twice the Volume, of the Volume Into Packaging, to hold the Total Water Needed, for the Mash, and the boil.

Baikinman,

You could go with the sound advice from laxon and be fine. Then, at some point in the future, you will get a bigger kettle. A 10 gallon (~40 L) kettle can Sometimes be cramped for 5 gallons (~20.5L) into packaging (VIP) unless you withhold some water from the mash - Section W. If you are making 13.5 L, I believe the difference between a 30L and a 40L pot's temperature behavior during the process is small if you insulate/cover it during the mash. The convenience factor difference is larger - storage, containment for foaming, handling of the weight, lifting the bag higher, etc. Think about your motions while using the kettle and go with what's right for you. Then, at some point in the future, you will get a bigger kettle. Brew on.

The 2x "The volume of beer to drink" sounds quite good to me too. I really appreciate the extra head space as well, because you don't have to constantly be on the lookout for your wort boiling over.

You may want to have a look at Nisbets then baikinman.

I have a Buffalo 40L urn that is still going great after 2-3 years.
Just had a look now and they are currently £80+VAT.
