Bag Fabric

Post #1 made 11 years ago
I just read a post by PP regarding low efficiency and he said that one cause is a bag that is too fine. I don't know what too fine is.. but, I have what is called voile at the fabric store. It is pretty sheer.. but is MUCH finer than the commercial bag I bought from the guy on HBT (Wilser IIRC) It has worked well for me.. so, I'm not sure how to tell if I'd get better efficiency if I went to a courser bag. I get almost NO grain sludge thru this.. which is nice.. Once on the boil, I believe I use some of my wife's panty hose that has had a run that is high on the leg. That is quite sheer.. about the same as my grain bag.. and no hop sludge seems to go thru it.

Aside from comments on using used panty hose.. any have a help on this topic.???

Bill, do they have "No-See-Um" Screen out there by you, or any screen material less than 45% open Area.

The Screening / Voile type Materials that catch the Sludge, are difficult to drain as well as, letting hot water thru the Sludge build up.

Panty hose are very Stretch-able so their Screening size changes due to Volume.

For great filtering Look for Polyester Cloth/Linen.

Back before the Aussies thought about BIAB, there were European's mashing in a big pot, and dumping the mash thru a filter material into the Kettle to Boil.

Hay Bill, wilserbrewer joined here this year. Just PM him here on this site, "wislerbrewer". Ask if they are voile, that is what is recommended.

Very cool, he's a quality poster.

I also use wilser's bags (not a euphemism  ), which are the same degree of fine as the voile I purchased from Target for my original pot. My efficiencies have been right in line with BIABacus predictions, FWIW.

0 issues with draining my grains. Hops though, I have started skimming hot break since I started using his hop sock during the boil, because that seems to gunk up and reduce flow quite a bit. Having issues squeezing the hop sock at the end of the boil is what had me catch on to this. May not be an issue if you don't FWH.

He's pretty meticulous, so I put a great deal of trust that he pays proper attention to this for all his customers.
