Mally goes to Hawkshead

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Inspired by Richard's post of brewery tours, here is some from mine during July & August (visited twice)!

Hawkshead Brewery, Staveley, (lake district). It is a small brewery but with some very nice drinks. Head brewer is a Kiwi too!

The best picture I saved until last, especially for PP. It is a view through the window into the fermentation room. We weren't allowed inside due to contamination issues, but what is that on the ledge outside? Not one, but two (yes two) refractometers!!

I didn't even pluck up the courage to ask about them

Mally,

I assume that they gave out sample at the end of the tour? Nice pictures. I took a tour of my local BIG brewery a few years ago. When we got to the 4th floor (the fermentation room) the tour guide was giving his speech and some lady said she didn't feel good? A few others said they weren't feeling well either?? The funny thing was that I was queasy also, but to manly to say anything! We all staggered to the stairs when we realized that major amounts of C02 was escaping and replacing all the oxygen. We nearly died of suffocation! We spent lots of extra time in the post tour tasting room. Apparently some valve was leaking or ventilation was faulty?
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

I spilt my coffee when I saw that pic mally. Disgraceful!

You should have asked though ;). I must say I am alway interested in how craft/commercial brewers take a reading. A lot of craft breweries publish recipes in a format that is impossible to replicate which makes me wonder a tad.

The big boys are a lot better at consistency but the way they do this is by blending and having accurate specs and measurement equipment that other brewers, let alone homebrewers, just can't afford.

:dunno:

Yes Bob, 2 free tickets for any beer of your choice :drink:

I hope they gave you extra beer for nearly killing you!

I daren't! I had already quizzed them most of the tour, water treatment, temp control, blah, blah. I even asked for a yeast sample and was almost marched out the door for trying to steal trade secrets

Interestingly, the 1st pic of the guy on the gantry was took during the international rainbow project Brewday

Sweet posts!

I would have had to pay good money to see a refractometer on an Anheuser-Busch Beermaster Tour http://www.budweisertours.com/z01/index" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... /programs/

I got the FREE ONE...

I'm going to Colorado soon and will tour the second one in the TRILOGY of the BMC - Coors in Golden Colorada.

I can't believe they have a beer school

"Beer School is a fun, interactive, and informative experience that explains the steps for beer appreciation"

I will be doing a Becks brewery tour next month in Bremen (Germany), I guess this will be a little more like Anheuser-Busch though :|
