New Build Recirculating BIAB

Post #1 made 11 years ago
I'm planning to eventually have two systems the BIAB will be the bigger of the two, its based on a 50litre pot with two elements, recirculating via a mag pump and a spray head all of which I got from Homebrew Builder.
The bag is supported by a SS basket made of mesh and the remains of an old Burco. I did a water test this evening and all's well although even with the tubing insulated I seem to have a 2°C difference between the temperature at the spray head and that measured at the bottom of the basket.

The temperature is controlled by a PID but that is the extent of the automation. After a few attempts at recirculating BIABs I have concluded that all it does is allow easier temperature changes.

Even in a brew in a can type, solid sides mesh bottom, there really isn't enough head pressure to force the wort through the grain bed its easier to flow over the top of the can.

My fermentation fridge is in use right now my son bought me an Evil Dog IPA kit for Fathers day so the new systems first real run will have to wait.

I spent a lot of money and a lot of time to reach the same conclusion, welcome to the club.

Interesting. My recirculating system ends up flowing through a sprinkler nozzle on the bottom side of the lid...seems to work just fine using a chugger pump. I've not seen the problem with overflowing over the grain, or poor circulation....I'm still dialing it in, but (with the exception of one, which I believe was under milled grain) my batches are all coming in at or near expected OG. Uses an in-kettle electric element.

It's a pretty elegant system and allows for Clean in Place (CIP) clean up. Not as simple as true No Sparge BIAB, but I'm liking the beer I'm making!
