Aquarium pump and air stone?

My LHBS jas % 20 off tomorrow so im gonna blow some more money on some flasks and a air stone kit. I guess an aquarium air stone is no good coz you cant boil them after. The biggest pump from a department store is $18 which works for up to 70lt. Will that work with a .5 micron stone?

Also how long do the air filters last for if you dont get them wet?

I probably wont get an answer before I buy something but maybe I should clarify my question.

Has any one ever used the aquarium stones?

Will any aquarium pump work, fittings, power level, etc? with a 2 micron ss stone.

Is it worth it? Should I just use a paint mixer on a drill?.

My first 2 brews where a little sweeter than I had expected. Could have been from too high a mash temp (with only one cheap thermometer at that time) or lower attenuation than expected so I though id give an air stone a go for brew number 4. The beer being sweet could also be because of my tasting inexperience and being impatient which is always the case. The beers are 5 weeks old now and getting better.

I'm certainly no expert on the subject but personally I siphon from my brew kettle to fermenter, (bucket), so I just hold the hose above the bucket and shake it around to splash the wort as much as possible, my fermentation generally takes off within 12hrs (only 6 brews so far tho) and has always met or surpassed the predicted FG. Less stuff to clean too. Suppose this might be more tricky in a carboy...

I use a air stone that is connected to a stainless steel pipe connected to a oxygen cylinder. I give it about one minute of pure oxygen to get the job done. I also use the wand (pipe) to stir in yeast. I am very happy with it. I buy disposable oxygen cylinders at the local hardware or home building supply for about $7.50 U.S. They are safe to use for human consumption. :peace:

Thanks bob. I was thinking I could try oxygen down the track but ill just use the air pump for starters.
