Last minute questions for brew #3

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hi all,
so Im doin my third brew tomorrow. The APA from BCS on page 134. Its short notice I know but better late than never.

I really want to have a good crack at keeping accurate records this time. After reading this post and links (most of it any way, short on time) I made a new check list thats better I hope than my first 2 dodgey hand written attempts. Ill post my biab file below. Any advice on the recipe would be cool but Im mostly interested in what you think of my check list.

On a side note I am also going to use a hop sock for the first time. My biab bag for bittering hops and a quick hop spider (with a custom already made voil bag) that Im going to make tomorrow for flavour and aroma hops. So do I squeeze the hop sock after I remove it? and with my 0 minute additions do I put them a bit early or leave them in a bit late?

PS I am happy to post every single BCS recipe that I do in a BIAB file but is that copyright infringement? I guess there's already heaps of them out there.

Cheers!

I'll comment on the hopsock, whirlpool, and trub part.

You can use one hopsock, if you like. You would at your flame out, add your 0 mins. hops. You could let them steep for about 10-15 mins., then pull the hopsock and squeeze it dry.

I see no reason to whirlpool when all the hop material will be captured.

I don't think you would see any trub form after 10 mins. after flame out. Cold break will happen much later in the cube. I would drain the whole amount into your cube.

Thanks MS. So if I empty the whole lot into the cube then there would no need to measure the kettle trub which is the last part of my check list.
Cheers.

Yes, you can measure the KFL trub later when transfer the wort over to your fermenter. :)

Just be careful on how much trub you take through to the cube. In another post I just wrote...
Let the wort sit after flame-out for 15 minutes before transfer to cube and try not to get too much crap through. Not enough research has been done on how a lot of kettle trub affects the finished product so stay on the safe side for now.
The hop sock will make a big difference to your trub. If it were me, I would just drain through to the cube until it starts to run cloudy. You'll then find that you will basically only get a few hundred mls of crap in the cube. Easy to add that to your KFL later if you want.

:peace:

Just cleanimg up now. I think it will take a bit of practice to measure the trub. My cube holds 21lt I think and I had figured about 2lt trub but that was before I even started brewing ag and I had beer smith on the brain and I am making 23 into the fermentor which is wrong. Any way I am getti g a better handle on the numbers so maybe next brew.

Going out for a beer for a change but ill change my pants first coz they're covered in trub and water lol.

Cheers.

by the way I did let the wort sit for 0 hops as MS said but I used an elbow on the inside of the tap this time which pocked up alot of trub. I might not use it or maybe modify it. Much to learn.

I woke up this morning and realised I could have just measured the trub in the kettle with the steeel ruler  :headhit: :idiot:  Then ad that to the trub in the cube. I was trying to pour it into a 2 litre jug and made a mess of it  and I was totally sober too. Got all the other reading though so nearly there. Oh well Ill get it right next time I hope.

My hob sock worked well. I used some 80mm aluminium tube I had spare. Maybe a bit small but did the job. I didnt realise how much the hops would swell up. It took awhile to wring it out with with the wort being hot still.
