BIABacus example for NRB's All Amarillo APA

Post #1 made 12 years ago
Hi Everyone,

Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me about the BIABacus designs for brewing the Amarillo Ale? Is it saying that for the Grain Bill (C) that I should use only Maris Otter instead of a combination of JW Traditional Ale, Munich 1 and Caraamber? Or just replace the JW Traditional Ale with Maris Otter? Same thing for the Hop Bill (D): I should use only Galaxy hops instead of Amarillo? Or just replace the Amarillo with Galaxy for the first hop step?

Thanks,

Steve

For the grain bill, it is saying that MO is a substitution for JW for the first grain.

For the hop bill, it is saying that Galaxy is a substituion for Amarillo for the first hop. That doesn't make it an all Amarillo though. :argh:

The last hop addition should be for 5 minutes.

Thanks Mad Scientist! Just clicked on the Recipe Report tab and saw the answer there, too. Don't suppose we can get Cargill to sell JW Traditional Ale in Florida :-) BTW, hope you didn't suffer too much from the weather.

Grain names are really confusing but don't be scared to substitute a grain. For example, that file you have shetc is one of mine. I didn't have any JW pale malt around (and I don't ever use it) so I used Maris Otter instead. I could have used any sort of pale ale malt though.

As for the Galaxy hop, it is of higher bitterness than amarillo (but has many similiarites so using that saved me some weight of hops.

:peace:

Thanks PistolPatch! The Maris Otter is no problem from most of the US suppliers. The CaraAmber seems to be a bit more rare for some reason so thinking about using CaraMunich I as a replacement.

Yep, the grain naming thing is yet another brewing terminology nightmare. The reason you are finding CaraAmber hard to find is that name is trade-marked by Weyerman, But, what is it actually?

It's just a light/pale crystal/caramel malt.

See here and here.
