Apollo Hops

Hi

Anybody tried using Apollo (USA) hops?
I have just bought 100g as a trial as they were 19.5% Alpha (just out of curiosity more than anything).
I didnt want to open the bag until i was ready to run with a recipe, so if anybody has used these hops (with this much Alpha), I would be keen to hear what you did.

I have never used this hop. Reading up on it makes me want to try it!
(Typical alpha: 18-21%. A US-grown super high alpha hop. Very strong bittering capabilities and intense, pungent citrus peel aroma.)

I love hoppy beers! I would use (only) this hop to test out it's flavors! A SMASH or (Single Malt And Single Hop) beer would do? That way you will know what that hop tastes like! But maybe it's to intense for you? Good luck and keep us informed!

Hi Bob

I too was wondering whether to do SMASH recipes for the next set of batches, as i also got williamette, Galena, Columbus, and Aramis (as i havent used any of these before), and i want to know if i can tell any differences. I have a theory that i will not be able to discern them, but thats what experiments are for! It's just the Apollo scares me a liittle :o

I will definately let you know what its like, i just need to decide when to do the trial brew.
I too like hoppy beers, in fact i am just trying my first AG & BIAB now (which is great) see link.
In fact with this IBU of 74 i could easily take more :) . Although, i do prefer very hoppy flavour & aroma, but not so much bitterness.
Once this current batch has dwindled, i will SMASH the Apollo, and let you know.

You should be able to discern a difference? I have had 4 different nose operations (Not Cosmetic) and I can tell the difference so you should too! Bittering hops will loose all aromatics! Flavoring or Aroma hops are added near the end of the boil or as dry hops! For bittering hops try putting the hops in after you pull the bag and are ramping up the wort to the boil. FWH First Wort Hopping Gives a better taste!

I have seen your hop tea before, thanks. I am not sure that i am in a position to try it yet, but it is something for me to consider in the future. :drink:

I will take your word for now that the tastes/flavours will be discernible as well. Its just that when i did my brew (in the link above), and an identical one previously (but with extract), i open the hops from their sealed pack, throw them in, and they all smell the same (raw, and when boiled), so maybe it is all in the taste anyway :scratch:

Anybody interested in the outcome of the Apollo SMaSH I did, I can say i would definately use these again. At 19.5% AA they are very versatile.
I did 10g @60 mins
10g @ 30 mins
20g @ 15 mins
20g @ 5 mins
40g @ 0 mins

Approx 50 IBU's total.

Very tasty.
The only downside was that I also experimented with mashing temps to see if i could taste the difference. Mashed at 69 C, and yep it sure is sweet :smoke:

Was that a boo boo? or was that your intent? If I hit the right temperature it's a cause for a beer! It happens so rarely!

You know us trendsetters that don't believe the hype and all that. Well it extended to mash temps with me!

Seriously though, I just want to know what differences there are at the extremes, so my next brew will be at 61C i think.
