Polar Brew 2013. Brewing beer on a frozen lake.

Post #1 made 12 years ago
All,

I brewed and recorded some BIAB footage and just saved it for a coming BIAB video. The rest of the video was put on the internet (YouTube) today! It was a warm winter day (26F and -3.3C) So it was a good time by all. It was such a good time that I had to pull over on the highway and water the flowers! (NOBODY was around!

60 minutes of video was cut down to 9 minutes! It is still a rough cut and many funny and interesting bits are just a pile of zeros and ones lying on my floor! But Brewing with friends and visitors and sharing beer was well worth the effort. See you all next FebBREWary!

That looked like fun again Bob thanks for sharing it. The squirrel chatter around the six minute mark was a nice touch. They seemed a little pissed witya.

Lylo,

I speed-id up the video 400 times and the audio was too! I was going to narrate to fill it in but I was going blind watching 60 minutes of video and trying to cut out most of it. The good stuff with interesting banter was just too long! I just got so far and said "I need a beer"! The Squirrel chatter was better than Bob chatter anyway! Next year I will try to do better!

My recent falling episode and sinus infection has left me with a lack of smell and correspondingly lack of taste! I don't mind people saying I have a lack of taste but when beer is your hobby. Lack of taste is a big thing! Hopefully it will come back OK. For now the beer is as tasteless as my jokes. The farts and bathroom bombs aren't to bad!

I have been told that everyone smells better than I do but that was before I fell? How did they know?????

It is great to watch Bob and others BIAB. Are there more baggers as the result of you, in your club? How many members strong?

Great video Bob!

Entertaining and educational at the same time! Great viewing! Thanks Bob.

I couldn’t have been there last years at those temperatures, but I’m just an Englishman, and I like the mid-day sun.

“Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun”, but what they didn’t say was mad dogs get up to a lot more than just going out in the mid-day sun :)

I wonder if PP would get some people together for a brew in the middle of the Nullabor Plain, at plus 40C, just to balance things out a bit. It could be coordinated by satellite and the video could flash between the two brew camps.

The brewing on the ice was my son Jon's first attempt at BIAB. I think we have a convert. This was the first time he finished before me. He realized it was easy to do 10 gal batches versus his 5 gallons the traditional way.

Love it Bob!

Instead of the squirrel chatter though you should have used this music;

Mad_Scientist, There were no baggers (Zero, Nil, None, Nada) When I started with the club. I was a 3V brewer just like them! I was lurking about aussiehomebrewer.com when I found a discussion about BIAB. It was 2006 I think? I had been working separately on the same idea trying to use Stainless Steel mesh for the bag. I found that those blokes did all the pre-work for me! So I just saved a lot of my own time and became a convert to the voil (shear draperies) way! There are about seven or eight people brewing BIAB now. Not only that, no one is looking down or talking disparagingly towards it!

Our club is not as active as it once was. We used to meet at a brewery in their greeting room where the tours ended up! We had all their free beer plus our own. After a dozen years they kicked us out! Our club split in two because the majority of the members came from a town twenty miles away and most of them where the organizational heart beat. The fifteen or twenty people left in our club are fairly loose and informal.

mally, I would have used the Benny Hill theme song if I had thought of it! Next time! :nup:

Lol Bob!!!

Just watched the video and skimmed the thread. GR said the video was educational so he's obviously drunk . But, he did mention something about doing a polar/anti-polar brew next year. Should we look into this?

That's the main question (not really) but I have more...

1. How do you walk so fast with concussion. (Bear in mind, I have only skimmed this thread so you may have already answered this.)

2. I just said, "Bear," above instead of, "bare." This brings to mind the question, "Why no bears in the video?" If you can't provide polar bears in next year's video, why should I be even thinking kangaroos?

3. Is the female brewer at the 6 minute mark unmarried? Does she have ambitions to travel to Australia? Do you think she would do a good job at being the first American representative at the anti-polar brew day? (Accommodation is no problem - may the brewing gods bless me :peace:).

...

Kostas and I are always emailing each other and our most common salutations are, "Crazy Greek," and "Crazy Oz-man." Brewing beer on an ice lake though???

In future emails, when I am talking about Americans who brew on an ice lake, I will write something like, "BobBrews (certified Seppo)..." You guys actually are crazy!!!

I can't believe you only answered that one question swamproad. It was, like, the furthest from my mind :P.

But, now that you have answered it, let's stay on that topic, purely to satisfy the mods here... Please provide more answers on Q3 of my last post...

PM's with pics are okay by me . Only two questions...

1. Is Jenny a good sport?

2. Can't think of my next question... This thread is just too damn exciting.

PP,
1. Is Jenny a good sport?
Yes she is! Didn't you hear me ask her to share a room with me (at the NHC) to save money? Actually she came over to my place twice to brew up something?? Both time's my wife was home and once she had a boy friend over! It made it too awkward so I had to be nice! The next time she goes to the land down under. I will give you her number!

Anti-polar brew day! It would be fun to do two videos with us on a lake and you in the outback! Next year!

See her also in the two prior Polar brew videos! :drink:

"Bipolar Brew Day" is perfect in every way. I hope PP and Bob go for it. Could add some lithium carbonate to the beer if it became too wild.

Kangaroos would be nice PP. I don’t know what crocs are like but I think Polar bears are a bit dicey.

Have been wanting to reply to this thread for the last two days but, (and I trust Jenny is not reading this), being a very attractive male on a massive income with lots of leisure time, I do feel that my priviledged status requires me to address the needy first and foremost. I'm sure, Jenny would understand the pressure I am under and that I also like animals and children (but, in a good way).

I'll try and write back properly after I finish attending the UNICEF board of director's meeting. (Just finished the Amnesty International BOD meeting. Long, but I think we achieved a lot. Good on us!)
swamproad wrote:She learned to BIAB under Bob's watchful eye.
That's obviously a major worry and we at, "LBWI - Learning Brewing with Integrity," intend to ensure that, after our next meeting, no brewer will ever be put in the same position as Jenny.

The dead give-away to, what must obviously be inappropriate dealings/education on BobBrew's part is, that Jenny is not an active poster here.

I can't believe this sort of stuff still goes on ,

You are quite right about may failings as a BIAB instructor. So I have been thinking that I will have to do a better and closer job of instruction while at the NHC in Philadelphia in June. With beer flowing and non stop partying going on. It will be a good chance to "brew up something"? Thanks for bringing this up!

I was 99% sure you were getting somewhere PP until i read your comment
This is just not attractive to the female of the species, they prefer the rough, rugged, just out of prison "bad boy" type. I am sure with a little nip & tuck of that sentence we could turn things around.

being a rough male on benefits with lots of leisure time, I do feel that my itchy psoriasis makes me needy. I'm sure, Jenny would understand the pressure I am under and that I also dislike animals and children.
I'll try and write back properly after I finish attending the AA meeting. (Just finished the kleptomaniac meeting. Long, but I think we achieved a lot. Good on us!).

Now that sounds better!

Confidence is sexy! (applies to men and women). If you are covered in psoriasis and just got out of jail be proud of it.

Don’t emphasise the UNICEF work and the love of animals and children, use that for dark horse effect. Keep your wealth and privileged status in the dark horse category too. Boasting and showing off status is read as insecurity.

Needy and helpless, and you’ll attract a caretaker. I’ve seen many of those relationships. The couple comes into the office and the man is completely useless. He would stumble out of the door and walk in the wrong direction if she wasn’t there to guide him. Seems to work out, but might be a strange kind of hell.
