of the regulars and a few surprise guests. (Watch out for Bob)
For-warned is for-armed!

Watch out for Bob is about the best help to be offered to a BIAB newbie! :interesting:
Not all advise is usable here but watch out for Bobbrews is a rock solid advice. ;) ;)

GuingesRock,

Thank you for your kind sentiments. You have raised a lot of good points in your posts above. Instead of answering them all in one post, hopefully you won't mind if we knock them off one at a time over the next few days?

There are four brewers we regard as founding the site. All of them play varying roles. Three of the four founders here are either, the or amongst the, original pioneers of BIAB. Some of them post under normal forum names here and some rarely post but all have vital roles behind the scenes.

While it is very nice that you mentioned the country where we did a lot of initial BIAB work, not a single one of the four founders here would like this site to defer to any one nationality. All of us love and appreciate the international flavour of the forum. Having one member celebrate Christmas at 40 C (102 F) while another celebrates at -28 C (-18F) is just one example of how interesting the diversity here is that you mentioned above.

We'll talk more on the culture of this site later and what we suspect creates it. For now GuingesRock, we really appreciate your trying to acknowledge the original founders. All of us prefer though to maintain a low or hidden profile as best as we can. Our view is that the less we have to post, the better the site is doing.

So, that's the founders out of the way. In the next post, we'll look at the Moderators and what they do. They are a lot more interesting than us.

;)

Really nice, and incredibly professional!
There had to be some excellent people running this.
Thanks and Happy New Year to you!

ps. I'm really looking forward to hearing about the moderators and the culture of this site.
pps. I should have responded to this sooner but was too shy :?

I AM a SEPPO!!!!

At least no one has said "Top o' the Morning, To You".

Or WUS-UP, Hows it hanging, or You in the News?

Good Evening.
Joshua,
I just wanted to say G’day, even just once, and get away with it.
"Top o' the Morning, To You" sounds good too, now you mention it.
You’re right though, greetings in keeping with one’s own culture would be a celebration of the internationality of this site, and it seems the founders have promoted that all along, so I’m on board.
Cheers mate! (I'm a Limey)

Well done Sydney. A great start to the New Year as, always!

Feel free to use this thread to post pics or memories of the last beer you had in 2012 or the first you had in 2013 or simply of what you are doing to see the new year in.

We hope 2013 will be a great year for all brewers,

Happy New year to all you biabers.
I don't think I'll be able to hold a camera by Midnight so I'll leave the pictures to Bob and Lylo.

Hope you all have a fantastic 2013 and may all your brews be good uns.

Ditto what Yeasty said!

I have cubed an apollo smash today, and am currently drinking a BrewDog "libertine Black Ale" so will be unable to type soon, let alone use a camera!

I wondered who Sydney was until I remembered seeing the fireworks on TV. G’New Year to you guys and thanks for BIAB and this site.

Its 6 hours until midnight here and batch 4 has just run out. Bugger it!...I hate that. Never mind, we have some locally made organic “Champagne” which tastes just like Moet (we tasted it in the liquor store). The conditions here in the Nova Scotian valley are the same as they are in the Champagne region of France apparently.

We are planning to stay in tonight and spend some time together. It’s been so hectic with the kids, family and all, and we haven’t really had any time together. But if I know anything about it we’ll spend the time together (she loves being put in the BIAB bag and spanked with a mash paddle…must be that new best-selling book that’s going around that all the women are reading) and then we'll go out and dance to a band.

Happy New Year!!!

Anyone got a pic of Corona?. Well, it was 41 C (106 F) here .

I did get some of my Munich Helles in though and it was tasting :yum:.

rdeselle has a thread going here for other New Year's pics. GuingesRock, we'll want to see pics there, or preferably a video, of you dancing :P.

Have a great one and thanks for all the interesting posts and laughs in 2012 ,

Happy new year BIABers!

Although I find I read more than I post, this is still my #1 site for beer stuff.

Tip of the hat to administrators and all the people behind the scenes!

I cna't wait till it is warm enough so I can brew again!

Post #43 made 13 years ago
We trust everyone enjoyed their New Year celebrations and have a few interesting brews planned for the coming year. Here are some answers to some points GuingesRock brought up earlier in the thread.
GuingesRock wrote:I was also impressed that the moderators and administrators seem to be active...
The moderators here are active but not in the way you might imagine. Members here post in an excellent manner which means that problems are extremely rare. In fact, until four months ago, any fully registered member could bulk PM the entire board. While this is a silly thing to allow on any board, the fact that it was only abused twice is a great reflection on the trust we have been able to put into the community. The biggest moderation problem we have had here in ages is post #6 of this thread. We're not sure what to do there  .

There are several types of moderators here. Some approve first posts. others might help people they see are having trouble posting pictures or quotes. Others ensure that no post on the board gets unacknowledged. Others write or review posts 'off the board' where ideas are bounced around and developed. Over 3,000 posts currently exist "off the board". Over half of these have been edited several times and many get deleted when we conclude that an idea is not practical. 2013 will see a lot of the fruits of such labours move onto the main board. Some of these are major and will be noticed. Many more are subtle but essential. Those who assisted in the beta process of the BIABacus have an understanding of this.

Regardless of the Moderator role, the focus is on service.
GuingesRock wrote:I would like to know who you all are, your stories and experiences.
We probably can't help you much here GuingesRock. Before the site began, the founders here wanted to ensure that the site's culture always remained helpful and friendly. Two of the policies we put in place were...

1. A requirement to make a first post before being allowed to post on the board. The thinking here was that the effort to write a first post provides evidence of goodwill. Secondly, a good first post helps existing members look after the newest members.

2. Founders and Moderators were to remain anonymous as much as possible. The first idea here is that founders and moderators should be able to post freely here. Their level of knowledge should not be regarded as being any better or worse than any other member. Secondly, any time you are communicating on the board, it's hard to know if you are communicating with a moderator or not. We suspect that this helps keep the courtesy level high.

We are not sure whether the above policies make a difference or if it is the natural goodwill that most BIAB brewers seem to have that keeps the culture quality high. Just in case these policies do have a role, we are hesitant to change them.

There is one final advantage to this second policy. Anyone who takes on an administrative or moderation role here knows that there is no explicit public recognition. This means that those with these roles are very well intentioned. We are very lucky that every corner of the globe has been able to give us these people.

We are also lucky in the fact that as the site grows and we need more moderators to help in these roles, we have no shortage of well-intentioned members to choose from.

2013

We really appreciate those of you who have made kind comments above as we do realise the current site structure has a lot of holes and clumsiness to it. When starting the site, we thought these holes could be fixed one at a time, easily and quickly. We were a little naive then. A lot of work and thinking has been done since and the beginning of 2013 will see us finally being able to plug a lot of these holes and clumsiness in one hit. Thanks to the older members for your great patience.

Fortunately, the site hasn't had to rely on its structure or tools to date. The enthusiasm of new members coupled with the enthusiasm of existing ones has been the key. In 2013, we hope that the new tools and structure will help accelerate the communication of quality information amongst members. We also hope to see Guests benefit from this and perhaps pass this information on in their local forums or just when they meet a fellow brewer. The faster and more widely quality information spreads, the better for the entire brewing community.

The tools and information coming to the site certainly have the potential to help the entire brewing community. We hope that everyone from guests to active posters here will pass these tools and information on and make 2013 a year where a new way of looking at things results in a major difference to everyone. The last big change in thinking about brewing occurred in 2006 with BIAB. Let's do it again.

Caring AND Smart...Nice!

Do you guys have enough money to run the show? I hope you aren't spending your own money. It's enough that so many people put so much time into this, and time is very valuable.

I'm only asking because I clicked on the donate button at the top the home page and sent a small donation (I was sure it would be put to good use). Judging from the thank you PM I got, it sounds like you guys fell off your chairs. Apparently "donations are a very rare event".

The other reason I'm asking is I like to be a pain. It's one of my specialities

About the girl by the tree  For myself and a lot of men (and some women to be fair) women and beer are complementary. You have football on here too. It isn't a site dedicated to religion, so we are ok there. But how do the women members on here feel? And gay members? Maybe post a picture that you like to even things up. Perhaps that's the problem. It's a little discriminating. Maybe it's fine. I don't know. I don't like football

Another thought for the women. If your guy is drinking beer, looking at #6 and getting horny. It might be easier to drag him away from the bloody football. ;)

If you get complaints about #6 on this thread or by pm, it might be worth taking it off (You could say you are just taking down the Christmas “decorations”). Personally I would like a site that is welcoming to all genders and gender interests. It would complement the internationality and broad mindedness of the site nicely. On the other hand the site shouldn't be boring and too restrictive.

Please excuse the slow reply GuingesRock. We're running behind schedule as always and your post has a few questions that are very hard to answer.

We'll leave the girl by the tree in this instance. Hopefully the female brewers here will laugh at the male silliness and humour just this once. BIABrewer would like though to see a lot of female brewers on the site and we hope that the culture here enables this. Our experience is that, post for post, on average, female brewers definitely win on quality.

I think any female would laugh at your, "You could just say we are taking down the Christmas 'decorations'".

As for the donation/financial side, we rarely focus on this. I think the only time we actively asked for donations was buried half way through the Favourite BIABrewer Ads post. We asked for $350 to give to Kostass who worked hundreds of hours on a version of the BIABacus. Nine members here raised $305 of that and BIABrewer made up the difference.

Apart from the above, there were 7 donations totalling $185 last year. Less the $45 above makes $140. That and a lot more evaporated into tech stuff.

So, you can see why every donation is individually acknowledged and appreciated.

Well over half the donations above came from active posters/contributors. We would prefer that these members had to put in nothing as they already contribute so much. One member, at times, actively refused paid work to contribute here. That added up to many thousands of dollars.

The main costs here are really skills and time. We want the site to be great and we have a lot of ideas that have sat latent since the site began. We currently don't have the skills/time to make them happen quickly. To do this probably requires a few people who are retired computer geniuses or perhaps a marketing genius who could raise the money to pay such people?

With a bit of patience, maybe these people will pop up. For now, the greatest asset we have are those who ask and answer questions here or who create interesting discussions.
