Anyone interested in doing a bottle swap???

Post #1 made 15 years ago
Is anyone interested in swapping a few bottles of brew?

I'd really like some opinions from other BIABERS around Aus on my current Brews.

My palate is not very mature and would like some more experienced guys to give me some feedback on my 'work'

I have Lloydies Kolsch, Smurtos Golden Ale & Troughlollys Yankee Doodle Amber currently fermenting/kegged/conditioning
Any takers?
I would love to sample other guys brews as well to see how far off the mark i am :)

Obviously i live in the bush so we would have to post to eachother, shouldnt cost to much tho only around the ten buck mark?

If anyone is interested, let me know and we will sort something out :)

Cheers!
RL

P.S. Can you even send beer thru the post lol ? Im not to sure..

I'm sure it can be sent through the post.

I'm lucky if I get 4 x 500 ml bottles from each brew. These are my samplers, just to make sure the beer's ok, while I wait for the keg to come on line, or for take away beers.

I'll give it some consideration, I have 4 bottles of my Speckled hen clone that'll be ready to drink next week. Obviously I need to try it before I can share it :)

Edit; spelling
"It's beer Jim, but not as we know it."

RL: If you can put up with my amateur styles, then I wouldn't mind swapping a couple. I don't have anything at the moment, but I'm currently fermenting a chocolate robust porter (extract mind you) and I'm planning to do my first full AG BIAB Best Bitter tomorrow. So assuming that goes well, I'll have a couple of drops to share in a month or so.

I'll be in for that but will need 3 weeks or so as my kegs are completely empty atm. Have three in the fermenter now.

As for postage, 3kg satchels are probably the way to go...

You can certainly fit two 750ml PET bottles in an Australia Post 3kg satchel ($9.90 postage to anywhere in Aust - expected delivery 4 days.)

A better option especially in summer might be the platinum 3kg satchel at $15.90 with overnight delivery. I couldn't believe it when I used one of these to post a few bottles recently. I posted them at 2pm in the afternoon from Perth and my uncle received them at 7am the next morning in Sydney!!!

It would be great if 3 bottles fit in these satchels but this might be hoping for too much.

Great idea RL! Be nice to do this on a regular basis - maybe 2 - 4 times a year or something??? It would also be good to rotate who you get bottles from each time. I mean I wouldn't want to have to drink NME's beer 4 times a year :) :) :)*

Cheers,
PP

*I'd actually be very happy to.

Sweet guys :)
Im probably 2-3 weeks away from having all of mine on tap so sounds like our timing might be spot on :)

Im happy to do this a few times a year for sure... will have to gauge interest and set up a rotation schedule of interested brewers :)

NME, you are spending too much time on women and not enough on brewing beer :).

Redlegger

I think I just had a brainwave that may justify the cost of sending each other beer. In fact, I think I have had two brainwaves...

Possible Brainwave 1 :)

I just wrote in another post here how annoying it is to have to buy a liquid yeast for those beers that you only brew occasionally but that require a particular yeast.

What I was thinking is that instead of having a fixed rotation schedule amongst us is that in swapping the beers, we could request slurries to determine who sends who their beers. I haven't thought this through entirely but here's an example...

Let's say I usually brew my beers with US-56 but occasionally like to do a brew with a lager yeast or a German Ale yeast. Usually, I would have to go and but a liquid yeast. I could farm the yeast etc to use it again but I'm not that interested in getting into that. What would be great is, if I could request in the "BeerPost," a slurry that had been recently brewed.

A properly prepared slurry is very unlikely to go off in less than a month - more likely it will last 9 months.

If I could get a slurry of a liquid yeast as well as two (maybe three) bottles of beer then that makes this whole BeerPost thing free. Well, pretty much ;).

Possible Brainwave 2 :)

Ralph sent Lloyd and myself some yeast strains and beer the other day. Lloyd tells me they were sent in a tin canister that held the plastic bottles nicely.

Having a standardised canister that fits in a standard Australia Post Satchel could be worth exploring or keeping an eye out for. One that could contain two to three PET bottles and one or two small, tall bottles for slurry would be tops.

If no obvious canister is available, I'll play around with some 5mm MDF and a satchel and see if I can come up with a flat-pack I can quickly distribute for nicks via the WA guys.

Hope at least half the above is a good idea ;),

I've sent quite a few bottles around the place. I find the best way is just to make your own box - a good one to start with is a six pack wine container that you can get heaps of from your local liquor store if you ask nicely while you are in there buying some Coopers etc. Then just cut it down and fold and cut again until you have a neat box that can hold 2 750ml PETs wrapped in bubblewrap. They normally cost around $9.30 to send. That's how I sent my bottles to the National Comp last year, arrived ok.

For sending a single bottle, the Post Office do cardboard tubes for sending posters or maps, you can cut bottle-sized lengths off and put a bubble wrapped bottle into it, and it will fit into a 3kg bag and send it that way.

I'll have quite a few samplers coming up as I'm putting six brews into the Brisbane Comp next month then eleven :o into the State a month after that. No not carpet bombing, more like precision strategic bombing   All brewed specially, to strict BJCP guidelines I can assure you :ugeek:

I'm in old son!

I think you should set a date and then we all follow it. Also set the packaging conditions. It could be as simple as purchasing the tube that Beachbum mentioned above and then "docking" it to the required length.

I reckon just set a date and some guidelines and we can wing it from there.

Spot,
PP

OK fellas, i got off my bum and went to the post office, picked up a standard 90mmx850mm post tube for $4.45 I will dock this to fit 2x 750mm PET's. The lady reckons 1.5kgs (about 2x 750mm PET's) will be about 6 bux to send from where i am (Kalgoorlie) to Perth. Not too bad i think if we re-use the tubes then its only a minimal cost to send each time.

If your interested, put list your name below and ill do up a rotation schedule. Might keep this one to beers only, and if all goes well we will incorporate yeast slurrys in the future.. what you think?

Good on you RL. Skipping the yeast slurry sounds sensible. In hindsight, transporting yeast slurry is asking for probs even if using the platinum parcel :).

I might have to transport some very nice commercial beers for this first swap (if that's okay) as I scored two infections recently. One is subtle and comes from some dodgy welding in these fancy kegs of mine (how hard was that to find - had to use a telescopic inspection mirror to find it!) and the other was from some dodgy yeast slurry that Lloydie and I used, lol! We tasted it and smelled it and thought, "Yep, it's okay," because we didn't have anything else on hand at the time. Good on us! It's drinkable but I wouldn't send it to anyone.

Do you have a "send-off" date in mind?

Cheers mate,
PP

Ahh infections! something i havent been burdened with yet (im only 5 BIABS in tho) Touch wood!!!

If you want to send commercial thats fine mate, but if you end up with me as your first postee then im happy to wait for the much reveered Ross' Schwarzbier ;)

I'm not sure how much interest we have gained , but lets say if we start small, aim for 4-5 people? Lets say if we wait till the fifth person registers their interest, the post date will be 1-2 weeks after they sign up?

Just my thoughts, anyone chip in if they are interested or think there is a better way to do this?

Im looking forward to feedback the most....and tasting other guys creations...mmmm

Andy

I'm interested in joining in on this, however all my beer is kegged at the moment. I have an Imperial IPA cubed which i'm going to bottle, I just have to get some yeast that will ferment it to it's estimated ABV of 10%.

Hi there Stitch,

Bottling from your keg is absolutely fine. Have a read here on ways in which you can do it.

Cheers,
PP

you can swap with me NME :) Ill PM you my details.
I tried bubble wrap but its a little tight and may take some forcing, i think they should be fine (if they are PET) for travel.

Just about to post mine off :)
Two PET bottles with 1 layer of bubble wrap around them fit perfectly, nice and snug with no movement! I just docked mine to length (chop about 350mm off one of the standard 90x850mm post pak tube)

Pic of the post tube ready to go!
