Hi everyone, I'm from the UK and like many others I got into brewing when I was bought a starter kit for my birthday.

After brewing a few kits and deciding I liked this new hobby, I stumbled upon BIAB. I wanted to try to lose the 'twang' that a lot of the kits seemed to have, so I've been reading up on here for a while.

I've already done my first mini-BIAB using Ralph's excellent guide and have supplies to do another before I try a maxi. The beer is so much better than any kit I've done, so I'm hooked!

Here's a pic of my first BIAB American Pale Ale

Hi everyone,

Similar story to edge and I guess many others. Done for kits today and all have that "twang". Hoping it goes with BIAB.

Located in Boldon, near Newcastle UK, although mother is Australian if that helps! Born somewhere I think called Coffs Harbour?

About to buy a Buffalo boiler and get stuck in to BIAB.

Will be doing lots of lurking and the odd blindingly stupid question.

Cheers!

Hello from Milwaukee. My friend recommended this site to learn about an easier all grain brew method. I'm new to brewing. I'm working on my second extract batch right now. Very interested in finding out more about BIAB.

I switched from the traditional 3 vessel system to BIAB after having a stuck sparge on my 2nd all grain batch. Never going back. Depending on my mood I might do a normal BIAB, a mini BIAB, or a MAXI BIAB. Sometimes I put the bag in my 5 gallon cooler so I don't have to worry about heat loss. Bottom line - it's all good. I brew all electric on my stovetop which is tricky in the USA due to our 120 V power supply .... harder to get lots of watts.

Here's my typical brew day - a modified BIAB.
1. heat water on the stove in 4 different pots
2. mash at 152 F in a cooler with a bag
3. pull the bag, put it in a colander on top of an empty pot to drip
4. pour the wort from the cooler into the big pot and start it heating up to a boil
5. put the grain bag back into the cooler, dump some 170 deg F sparge water in with it.
6. pull the bag and put it on the colander, dump the sparge wort into the big pot
7. squeeze the bag, add the squeezings into the big pot. put the bag back into the colander
8. add hops, boil, brew per recipe.
9. since I hate to waste good wort I'll take the last of the drippings, give the bag another squeeze, and put it in the pot for the last 5 minutes to boil and sterilize.

depending on the volume I may end up with two big pots to hold all the wort. If so I'll put some of the hops in each one.

At the end of the day it's beer. Are my recipes repeatable ... heck no. I'm a chemical engineer. Keeping good data and records is what I do at work. At home I just make stuff up as I go along. THat's half the fun !!!

Hi there beer4 and welcome to the forum :salute:,

There are lots of guys here including myself who have gone from three-vessel to full-volume BIAB. Crusty is the latest I know of and his three-vessel system cost $3,000 to build! Have a read of post #10 here.

If you come across any BIAB negatives, ask them on the board and someone will give you a clarification or answer. There's a few myths that do float about and these can lead to brewers over-complicating the process :P. There are very few situations where the brewer needs to do this. jimcoffey's post above is a very good example of one of these few situations (stovetop brewing) where adding more vessels/steps is necessary because of the small kettle size and heat source.

The info out there can be pretty confusing. Asking questions on this site usually yields pretty thorough answers so dive in :).

;)

Hey all. My name's Phil and I live in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. Been brewing for about seven or eight years, but just went all grain BIAB earlier this year. Had good results from maxi-BIAB straight off, so I was inspired to keep going :champ:

My main preferences are for hoppy apas and ipas, and I'm happy with the results I'm getting from ag and partial mashes for these styles. Can't wait to get an urn or a bigger pot and burner so I can start making higher gravity beers.

I look forward to sharing! Cheers!

Hello All! First Post

I am an Aussie living on the Darling Downs which is about 200km west of Brisbane, QLD.
I found this site through AussieHomeBrewer.com (I think).
There is a hell of a lot of information here and I am still digesting that which I have read so far, it all seems awesome!

I have never brewed beer in any capacity, and having tasted some not so good extract and kit beers decided to start with BIAB. I have purchased all of my BIAB gear from craftbrewer.com (no affiliation) in Brisbane, QLD. Ross and the guys there are very helpful, Anthony has defiantely helped me out a lot with getting setup and helping scale recipes for a 40lt urn. He also helped with BeerSmith2. Absolute CHAMPIONS.

I have just completed my first "BIAB brew day," I brewed with the recipe "Nelson Sauvin Summer Ale". I will post more about this later. I could not have done this without this great forum.

I am currently working on my family's farms, we have an irrigated crops farm and also a dairy farm. I have also been studying Engineering at my local University and plan to transfer to Brisbane to study Architecture.

Cheers Ben

Good Day Beer4, Electric(urn, stove,Hotplate) for small brews Indoors.
Gas Burners, for Big brews, outdoors, under a roof, or excellent ventilation.

Or Hybrid, Mash indoors with electric, then move outdoors for the Boil with a big gas system

Hi, Everyone;
I am from central Virginia, USA, and started brewing in May of this year. I have done 4 extracts and am now ready for BIAB. I want to be able to have the flexibility of AG without all the gear. I found this site by googling BIAB. Glad I did as there is a ton of great info and decades of experience. I am looking forward to being a member of this forum.
Cheers,
Susie
