BIAB is growing in the US.

Just a bit of information for your gratification. Last weekend we had a brew party at the home of a club member that has migrated to a full brewery. It was many of the same mob of brewers that I have been brewing with for years. I was the only BIAB'er within a days driving distance. I had four people brewing with BIAB last week! Most of them had bags stitched up by my better half. It was very gratifying that I was involved with the conversion.

I even had a guy using no chill with the others wanting to get their own cubes! At last nights club meeting one of the traditional 3V brewers overheard someone ask me about no chill and he said "you can't do that you will get DMS" before I could respond someone else? said that that was not true! I could not believe it! No only do we have four BIAB brewers they are defending no chill without my help! Times have changed!

On a side note. I brewed two beers that day and was finished cleaning up before some 3V'ers were with their one brew! I brewed a simple Cream Ale and a batch of "Smoked Bacon and Eggs" beer! I cooked some bath cooked eggs in the mash (and ate them) and brewed some beer with 50% cherry smoked malt. The Bacon comes in after the fermentation.

I cooked the poop out of some bacon to the point that it was black. I soaked up as much of the grease as I could with paper towels and then crumbled the 8 strips of bacon to dust. I then placed the bacon in a sanitized jar with vodka. The grease that was left has floated to the top and I will pour off the bacon flavored vodka into the keg when kegging! I hope to have a fun time drinking Smoked Bacon and Eggs for breakfast? Or dumping some smokey flower fertilizer?

Yeah, great work Bob :thumbs: :salute: :champ:. I've heard of 'the Bible belt' in the US but it looks like Bob and a few others are creating 'the BIAB belt' :lol:.

The plants should really enjoy the smoked bacon and eggs beer Bob :lol:. (Just joking ;). How'd you think that one up? :o.

Hey Bob, that's great! As to the bacon, I personally don't "get" bacon in beer but I can tell you that if you bake the bacon in an oven on a broiler pan to cook it, it will allow all the grease to drip away and result in very dry bacon that will crumble into powder yet you don't have to over-cook it like you would in a frying pan.

Good Day Guys,
I live at the "belly-Button" above the "Bible Belt".
In Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, they all have some laws against Home Brewing.

So Bob Should Stay up North, "Bacon and eggs" Beer could get you in Real Trouble!!!

Thanks for the comments guys! PP I don't exactly know where I can up with my version? Some brewers have bacon beer as a regular thing. Todd I wish I had made it the way you suggested! Oh well maybe I should have not used ferm-cap the grease should keep the suds down anyway. At least it is fermenting OK.

I just walked in from taking the family out for dinner. What did I have you ask? Drunken Chicken! How did they know I was coming?

Wow Bob, bacon beer. I love beer and I love bacon, not sure if I would love them together but there is certainly going to be some interesting conversations when you serve that one up.

Ok Bob, combined with my coffee stout -- we have a breakfast of champions! (or a really good reason to sleep in late and just do bruch:lol: ). Let us know the tasting notes. (I can just see your recipe featured in the BeerSmith newsletter).
There are more and more articles popping up about BIAB in the US. It's not particularly a good idea if you are a homebrew marketing guy. This idea really kills sales for the crap I have sitting around collecting dust. But the down-under idea is just too sweet for Americans to ignore in this economy. I've been cordial and "sensitive" and even diplomatic in my views. But eventually I'll just have to throw off the padded boxing gloves and say it is totally foolish to continue with 3V brewing when our Aussie friends have have come up with another system that blows all that useless gear out of the water. I LOVE the beers I've made with BIAB better than my 3-vessle system (and love the brewing sessions better).
Now watch me try and say that in "Homebrew Talk" without mindless attacks :shoot: .

When I brewed last Saturday. A friend that has a beautiful 3V setup parked his equipment across from mine. He brews great beer and is very proud of his setup. I stood next to my simple kettle and answered questions about BIAB. He watched and listened. I felt a bit uneasy because he spent a lot of money and years of 3V research only to have have a Knuckle-Head like me take the spotlight. I never would say anything bad or derogatory about 3V but sometimes I just feel funny brewing two beers and cleaning up before them! Extract, BIAB, 3V all brew great beers. It depends on the brewer's skill, luck and the alignment of the stars sometimes as to who makes the best beer that day?

The only logical arguement I have heard is the weight of the bag,particlarly for 40L batches.These people argue that a pulley system is too complicated(as the proudly disply their 3v sculpture!)

I am working to build a contraption that will sit atop my kettle to pulley up my bag. So if I pull this off (no pun intended) I will join those of you complicating the process but allowing off site brewing of large grain bills. Wish me luck!

A simple tripod with 'C' shaped feet too sit on the lip of your kettle would work a treat. Although you still need to move the bag once it's drained (it will be much lighter once drained).

Great idea Bob, I look forward to seeing the results of your wisdom.

Bob Brews, donya for not trash talking the other guy, but instead just doing what you were doing in a competent fashion.

For those of us doing stovetop half-batches, the weight of the bag isn't even an issue! I highly recommend that anyone doing stovetop brewing try BIAB. And, has been pointed out, BIAB is an easy transition from extract brewing without a large investment in additional equipment.

There are a few folks on HBT that don't like BIAB or perpetuate the "less efficient" line, but most aren't bad. We had a thread there a while ago about breaking off a separate BIAB topic, but the final decision was that it fell under All Grain. Maybe that was a wise decision after all. Most of the posts in that All Grain forum deal with issues other than how to run a 3V or BIAB brew, but those questions are also asked and answered.

I feel bad about saying a negative thing about HBT. They did help me grow as a brewer. I feel bad for those guys who have invested so much in 3V. I was 3V and about to make the big jump. My brother-in-law welds really good and volunteered his time. I almost invested $3000 dollars in a big system (almost no labor included). Let's say it would be one of those $5000 setups. This was pre-BIAB knowledge. I can't even imagine rubbing it in their faces if I spouted off about my my bag hoist system for less than $100 (way less than that even). Bob is right. Just show it but don't flaunt it. We try to be good guys here. It's like being a radical preacher among heathens. Bite our tongues, I guess? It's so sad... Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha suckers! OOPS there I go again.
