Software Variety.

Post #1 made 14 years ago
I did a brew today and used "The Calculator", Brewmate and Ian H's designer. I was quite amased as the volumes came out pretty much "cock" on over the 3 different softwares, the gravity was correct and the brew length although calculated in different ways came out pretty much "cock" on too, over the 3 varients. I have not embarked yet on efficiency suffice to say it is really good to brew fine drinkable beer in to a keg and be proud! Efficiency can come latter.

Roll on BIABbacus.

I use a Mac and have installed Parallels with Windows 7 along with Open Office which allows me to run XLS spreadsheets, although the macros don't work, but hey, life is good here in paradise!

Good on you Shifter!

Sorry you haven't had a reply until now - that time of year unfortunately :). Ian is one of the BIABacus betas and always keeps a close eye on figures so you should have no problems there. Brewmate has used the BIABrewer default liquor to grain absorption ratio so, if you have your equipment etc, set up right, volumes should match there as well.

One thing that can get confusing with programs like BrewMate is definitions such as 'batch size'. The BIABacus uses no ambiguous terms and shows, in full, all losses throughout the brewing process so that you can understand what every figure means. It's simple to set up for a beginner but allows for over-rides by the advanced user.

If macros don't work for you, you will not be able to access a few cool features but the basic numbers should work fine.

This time next year, I hope you are doing a brew and tell us what software you are using.

Happy new year to you,
PP

PP,
Thank you for your response and Happy New Year to you.
I presume batch size as depicted in Brewmate is volume amount in to the fermenter not actual volume in to keg? That is the premis I have been using.
Any idea when BIABacus will be on general release?

Thanks Shifter and I'm sorry for the really slow reply. I'm away from home for a few more days, am using a laptop (which I can never type on) and have an interent connection here that is so bad, half the time it won't even load these forum pages. Have ended up using my phone as my modem now :smoke:.

I'd have to load up BrewMate (which is at home) to answer your first question above sorry.

As to the second question, I think the BIABacus is close to the stage where it could be released though several macros are playing up and these could be tricky to fix. The version that does get released will just be a stop-gap until the program can be properly written into code.

So, the main jobs left are for the forum front to be re-written and for a guide to be re-written. These will take many hours to do so we'll have to hope the guys working on it will get some free time soon to get stuck into this.

I recommend that anyone wanting the BIABacus now, write to Pat and become part of the betas group. This will give you access to the BIABacus now which, apart from some macros, is functional in Excel 2007 and above. Otherwise, you might find yourself waiting for a few more months as unforeseen problems pop up all the time.

Cheers!

I know you guys have been working hard on BIABacus really hard for a while now. Surely you can release a beta for the new brewers to try out.

If not is there at least a time frame for the release? I would love to at least see what has happened to it since Stux's last release.

[EDIT: Links now added below.]

I have made several attempts over the last few weeks to write an update rb. Unfortunately I have been unable to work out a way of making it brief :dunno:. I will start two threads today...

BIABacus Update
BIABrewer.info Update Thread

I'll put the links in above when finished. Be prepared for a long read though sorry.

Thanks rb,
Pat
