Fermcap-S Foam inhibitor

Post #1 made 14 years ago
I try to keep my brewing as natural as possible. Though my first BIAB will be in a week or two, I have maybe 90 some batches under my belt (maybe only 25 AG). As I consider doing lagers it seems that fermenting in kegs will take up less space in my keezer. So I am considering using Fermcap-S in the future for heavy lagers. Also, with heavy Ales it seems that I loose a lot of beer through the blow-off tubes. Does this stuff detract from the quality or "nostalgia" of beer? Does it kill the head foam? The only thing I've heard is that it bumps up your IBUs by 10%. If your hop flavor is critical does it alter that taste as well?
Thanks
On a separate note: I have seen some cool air-lock designs that allows blown-off beer back into the fermenter. I just think it would be a height issue in the lager cooler chamber.

Ziggybrew,

I use Ferm-Cap. I use it in my brew pot and my fermentation bucket. It has no ill effects. It brakes up the bubbles so that you don't have boil overs. The Ferm-cap drops out of solution so it does not effect the head of a beer.
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Thanks Bob, "Drops out of solution" is a comfort. The hot break and needing blow off tubes are about the only parts of brewdays I don't care for. I might even try this with wine and meads. I had a Strawberry Rhubarb wine that was very violent once.

You know, if you use a larger fermenter the blow off tubes arent as necessary ;)

I use 25L buckets with 20L targeting 19L (5 us gallons) into the keg. That gets me about 7L of headspace which is normally plenty to ensure no blow off

Buckets are easy to clean to.

And i also have a tap on my buckets.

And they stack!

Funnily enough, I've started fermenting in 60L fermenters, and I only have about 5L of headspace now so blow-off is a big problem :)

The funny thing is I googled some info on Fermcap, and I found this post ;)

I'm currently using a blow-off tube, but I'm trying to find some fermcap in Australia to try and control the mess/loss
