"WELLINGTON -(Dow Jones)- More than 100 properties in the Nelson region rated too dangerous to enter are currently being inspected and several may have to be demolished after intense flooding in the area last week, the Nelson Tasman Emergency Management group said Monday.
The region at the north of the South Island, known for being one of the sunniest areas in New Zealand, entered a state of emergency Wednesday after several days of heavy rain. Roads around the region have been closed and several small towns have been cut off by landslides and flooding. The main water pipeline servicing Nelson, the Maitai Valley pipeline, has suffered damage from several landslides. Engineers are currently on site and the pipeline is being monitored closely, the emergency management group said.
The state of emergency is in place until midnight Tuesday but will be extended for a further seven days"
