Kettle wrap

Post #1 made 15 years ago
I'm trying to figure out the best material to use to make a keg wrap to insulate my keggle during the mash. The first materials that run through my mind are foil covered bubble wrap covered be a neoprene wrap with velcro seam. I have two giant reflective windshield shades that seem thick and somewhat insulated. They might work in a pinch. Anyway, i'm posing this topic in hopes some good suggestions of tested or theoretical ideas.
Cheers

I use a layer of sizalation, which is like a foil sheet one side and blue on the other used in building, against my kettle followed by a layer of yoga mat from clarke rubber followed by another outer layer of sizaltion. This works an absolute treat. I get about a 1.5-2 degree heat loss over a 90 minute mash on a cold winter morning when the ambient temp is about 10 degrees.
The outer layer of sizalation is probably not that necessary for insulation purposes, but as the layers are permanantly lagged to my electric urn I find it makes it easier to clean.
The inner layer keeps the rubber mat from melting during the boil.
