Latest tinkerings with portable dispensing unit

We need a DIY section.
Finally got off my arse to tinker with an idea I'd been tossing around in my head for a while now. I needed a way to keep a keg cold for my wife's work conferences. Being the cheap SOB, I mean thrifty recycler, that I am I wanted to go the route of re-purposing stuff that might otherwise end up at the landfill. A year or so ago I noticed a phone company utilities container that had washed down the creek behind my office after a flood. It was lodged up in the woods and the bottom was broken off. These are the things you see all along the side of the road that cover phone connection access points above ground, at least I think they are. Didn't think much about it but being the re-purposer I filed it away in the back of my brain. When I started brewing again the wife wanted to take full advantage of my blood, sweat and tears to up her social standing in the regional work conference hospitality club. My first thought was to go with the large rolling cooler and stick the keg inside and pop a tower or tap into it. But that was WAY to easy. I needed to do something more complicated to release my inner tinker-er. If only I had something round and large enough to hold a keg,,,,,,,,hmmmmmmm.
Behold the franken-tap-o-matic

schlitz,

That is some fine work and re-purposing! I like the whole idea of it. If it keeps the beer cold? You will have a winner. Thanks for sharing it. Maybe we will have a DIY area starting here?
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Great stuff schlitz - love the sign .

Here's some more for you to tinker with ;). Fonts pur beer notoriously badly as all the warm air floars right up to the tap head. Unless you are pouring beer after beer, you end up with a heap of froth. In commercial setups, they have lines with glycol pumped at a few degrees below freezing which surround the beer line keeping the beer and font head chilled. You could do something similiar with an aquarium pump and iced water. Alternatively, a fan to push cool air up to the font head would make at least some difference.

Also maybe put the gas bulb set-up inside. Won't hurt will it? Or do you only turn it on occasionally?

Nice job schlitz .

Oh boy oh boy something else to tinker with. I hadn't really thought about keeping the tap cool but it makes sense. Most of the time the keg is pouring fairly fast and is empty in a couple of hours but it is something to take into consideration.
What about a first step of insulating the beer lines, tap area and a foam cap over the keg? I've got an ideas popping into my head for a pumping system to recirculate the cold water up through the tap box. Maybe I finally have a use for that windmill, solar panels and old Mazda pickup fuel pump I have laying around,,,,,too much maybe? Yea the solar panels are probably unnecessary, don't want to go overboard or anything ;) .
If only I had the time to tinker instead of having to do this "work" thing.

Cheers,
M

Obviously, the windmill should be used to drive your grain mill....

:P

The insulation will certainly help. Get the black foam that is used to insulate hot water pipes. These are actually used in pubs as well to wrap the beer lines and glycol lines between the cellar and the tap. Maybe you can choose a size that will allow for the addition of cooling lines later on? If the keg is flowing regularly, then this might be all you need.

:luck:
