Ipa recipie help needed

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Hi i have been brewing single malt and mainly single hop beers and would really like to try my hand at some late addition and dry hopping to make a nice maybe dank IPA,
This may be to much to ask but was wondering if anyone could help me knock up a recipe and hopping schedule for the ingredients i have bought, the choice is based on an american style ipa with piney, resinous, grapefruit and citrus in the finish, I'm a bit of a hop monster so more flavour and aromas the better.
The problems i am having is to work out which hops, how much and when to use in the boil for bittering and how much /which hops to use in late additions and dry hopping for the flavour/aroma's.
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou
Ive got,

5kg Marris otter Pale malt
100g columbus alpha 17.3%-2014 harvest leaf hop
100g summit alpha 17.5%-2012 harvest leaf hop
100g cascade alpha 6.7%-2014 harvest leaf hop
100g amarillo alpha 8.8%-2013 harvest pellet hop
1 pack safale us-05

ps i have got beersmith2 but still trying to get used to it. :?:

Hello fluidjuice,

Can’t believe I’ve found a fellow Devonian on the forum  where abouts are you based? (Newton Abbot here!)

You’re probably better of getting to grips with BIABacus rather than using beersmith2. It’s better suited for BIAB and you’ll get more support with recipes on this forum if you can post a recipe report from it.

You could keep it simple and use:

100% Maris Otther
Coloumbus for bittering and a mixture of Amarillo & Cascade for the flavour and aroma additions. It's hard to give quantities without knowing your setup and desired volumes. Best thing to do is to start punching in some numbers in to the BIABacus then post the report for help.

Good luck :salute:

Not too far away then!

I’ve had a play and attached a brief recipe that I came up with and the corresponding BIABacus file (see attached). I don’t have any experience with Coloumbus or Cascade hops but have used Amarillo and it’s really nice. I think the below hop bill would give a good balance of what you want.

I would download the file and play around with it. You’ll need to change the kettle size to match you’re equipment. Some of the hop additions you might want to change depending on what you want  You could look at adding some wheat malt to aide head retention and give it a bit of body.

Wow thank you so much for taking the time to do that, funny enough i don't quite understand all the inputs etc for biabacusk yet but will learn fast, before i read your post i was going to post a screen shot of my idea of hop schedule for your perusal, don't know if it would work?
cheers

ADMIN NOTE: The above comes up very poorly and incomplete on my browsers fluidjuice. I would recommend just sticking to the protocol of posting your file here as an .xls. Many thanks Pat.
