I can't tell, check these sources for the same Recipe....

https://byo.com/hops/item/153-attack-of-the-hop-clones

http://beermumbo.com/a-simple-all-grain ... ipa-clone/

http://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/r ... nute-clone

http://home.comcast.net/~rhagerbaumer/r ... e_IPA.html

There is different information on the grain Bills, and Single-Mash to Multi-Step mashes.

Ok guys, I finally took a shot at loading this recipe into the BIABacus. So I have no idea what the VAW is supposed to be so I presume this means this recipe is a non-starter? Also, the recipe says 70% efficiency but when I try that value in the Adjust Auto Kettle Efficiency cell of Section X then the Fermentable Bill seems to be over the top (79% efficiency makes the numbers closer).

So I guess the real question is how the hell do I find recipes with integrity? How are people on this forum coming up with clone and original recipes?

If you set your VIF to 17L and efficiency to 70%, maybe that's what they mean? That gets 5 gallons of VAW. 70% would be a good first to try, imo.

Ok, MS, I see that if I set Section B VIF = 17L and Section X Adjust Auto Kettle Efficiency = 70% then Section K VAW is almost 5 gallons, and the Section C Fermentable Bill matches the quantities from the original recipe. So should I now do the following:

1) Set Section B VIF back to 18.92L (5 gallons),
2) Set Section X Adjust Auto Kettle Efficiency back to the default 84%
3) Set Section D VAW to 18.92L (5 gallons)?

Steve, the best I can offer atm is this;

Set VIF to 18.92L (if this is the size you want to make)
Set VAW to 22.75L or 90 IBU in Section D
Set Section X volume loss from lauter to 0.40L (per note from the first impressions post #1 thread)

The 72.8% efficiency prediction is very likely, if not worst (68-70%)

For the VIF 18.92L size, it's likely you will have at least 4L of KFL, so set that too.

p.s. I had to brew my clone at least 3 times just to zero in on the OG. It helps to know your evaporation rate average and grain absorption too.

When are you brewing this one?

Ok, MS, I made the adjustments as recommended (see attachment). So the main thing that stands out is that the Fermentable bill calls for 19 lbs of 2-row as opposed to 16 lbs in the original recipe, yet the hops amounts are the same. Do you know why that is happening?

Ok, so I understand there is some trial and error with using recipes that don't have a lot of integrity. I am willing to invest the time and money to get better at experimenting with these recipes (including taking more measurements). You have been very helpful -- am I right in assuming that you think this recipe is worth the effort, and the process you are showing me is typical for adjusting to fit the BIABacus?

BTW, I am in no particular rush. Just trying to learn so I can be better with the BIABacus.

Thanks very much!

Steve

Steve, It appears that when you recipe Exceeded the Size of your Kettle, BIABACUS needed to add grains to make up for the The Overflow.

If you can Handle a Specific Gravity 1.075, you will be at the "Maximum Kettle Mash Limit", and need only 15.87 Pounds of 2-Row.

JMHO YMMV

Thanks Joshua! I'll keep that in mind going forward.

Thanks, MS. I have attached a BIABacus for the BYO clone but with no adjustments. The article does not mention anything about efficiency -- the Fermentables Bill is quite close, for what it's worth. Hope the nephew's wedding was fun!

Looks good Steve.

I made two changes in Sections W & X, some amount of water needs to be withheld from the mash. I added the default 0.40 l/kg volume loss from lauter, that is mentioned in the notes for BIABacus Version T users.

p.s. Wedding went well. I drove my Mom and Sister to my baby sister's in Byron Ga. 19yo nephew and bride is on cruise in eastern caribbean now.

Thanks very much, MS!

Regarding Sections W & X adjustments: "Water used in a sparge" means do a sparge, I presume -- is there a link that explains how to do this for BIAB? Also, please point me towards the notes for BIABacus Version T users (I get lost in this forum, I'm afraid).

Glad you and yours had a good time at the wedding.

If you suspend your bag over the kettle, just pour that litre or two over the bag, if not, just add it in before the boil.

BIABacus pre-release first impressions post #1, follow the note link.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA clone at 8.8% ABV after 2 weeks fermenting. Now for 5 days of over the top dry hopping.
