Mash out

Hi guys,
I have just completed my second Biab and it went well.
I do have a question about mash out, this is the first time I have done a mash out.
I lifted the bag at the end of the mash and then bought the wort temp to 78 c then dropped the bag back in for another 10 mins. Lifted the bag after this and let it drain while I bought to boil?

Is this the right procedure ?

Hi Brendan

Nothing wrong with doing it that way. I take it you gave it a good stir when you put it back in and before lifting.

As long as you protect your bag during heating is the main thing.

Many advocate leaving the bag in while heating up to mash-out temp. Not heating too quickly and constant stirring is a common recommendation. It works for me. As per Yeasty, protection for the bag must be provided. eg. an urn with an exposed element

I have been leaving my bag in while stirring all along. But Taking it out while heating it to temperature is perfectly fine. I (lately) have been pulling out the bag, dumping in my bittering hops and replacing the bag and then heating. FWH (First Wort Hopping) is new to me and I have been playing around with that. So far no definitive results?
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV
