I offered these to my local area club members via AHB and was completely under-whelmed by the lack of any response, so you blokes are the winners.
I have 9 (maybe 10) Mt Hood hop rhizomes for give away or swap for different varieties. For Quarantine reasons I can't post to WA or Tas.
Let me know if you want some.
Cheers
Gavin

Hi Gavin,
that's very generous of you and for sure, I'm interested but not growing any myself yet, so don't have any other varieties to trade. How about a few slants though? Ales: 1469, 1768, 1882 at the moment, hopefully the freshly- slanted 2247 (euro lager) will grow out so I should have some of that soon. These are all Wyeast PC (aka VSS) strains, so only available seasonally, although CB is still selling 1882 ATM. More than happy to swap/ trade/ share any or all of these!
Many thanks!
Ralph.

G'day Gav,
If you can spare one I'll grab one, I've got a first year POR in a 1/2 wine barrel. I'm not sure of the growth but if it's any good I could probably send you one. It's still green at the moment and I'm not sure whether to cut it down am have a look.
Cheers Brad

No worries Brad, PM your details and I'll get a couple in the post for you. If you have a POR available, that'll be great, if not, no matter.
If you want to give it a go I'm happy to send a couple. I've read on AHB, people in QLD growing them with good success.jimmysuperlative wrote:I'd love to say yes, but I'm way above the 36th parallel ...or whatever they reckon hops grow best at. :(

Jimmy, I'd certainly give them a try in Rocky, IIRC they grow well at Bundaberg without too much hassle and perhaps even further north. May not be right for commercial crop yields, nothing to stop a hobbyist though.
Also, many thanks Gavin, that's just brilliant and I really appreciate it! :D (PM en route.)

For now you can just keep them damp in the bag and keep them in the fridge. Then in early spring put them in some dirt, about 2 - 3 cm below groung level, vertical and with any shoots pointing up.
I have got my last years POR in a half wine barrel with a home made extendable trellis. This worked well, but I probably didn't water them enough through the hotter days, something I will be more careful with next season.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Brad

Personally, mine are all in the ground and will stay there.
With Ralph and Justin being in Queensland, I'd at least keep them in the fridge until you start getting cold nights. Once the nights are cold, stick them in the ground enriched with compost or decomposed manure.
They can be planted either vertical or horizontal. Personally, mine are horizontal (less digging).
Remember, while they are dormant over Winter, don't get carried away watering them, they may just rot in the ground. Give them a drink, maybe, once a week if you have to. But really they shouldn't need much at all until they shoot in Spring.

Thanks again hashie for the 'zomes, and for the tips too.
I was thinking of keeping them in the fridge until after the worst of winter is over while they're dormant, then before spring, say September, plant them out in great big pots horizontally (I can't understand why anyone would want to plant them vertical?), feed and water carefully to avoid rot issues. Probably good to be careful with excess organic matter and mulch as it will all just become more compost and rot the precious little 'un. Once things get a go on though, it sounds as though its 'chocks away!'
Probably research some more over the long, dark, cold nights we have here with Queensland winters (/wink) but for now, they're safe in the fridge.

I think people plant them vertically because you may have shoots coming from various points around the 'zome and when you plant them vertical it gives all shoots a chance to grow straight upwards where as if Amy shoot are pointing to the bottom they basically have to turn around. (Not sure if this is really an issue, it just seems logical to me)Ralph wrote: (I can't understand why anyone would want to plant them vertical?)
And I think that when you see one that has grown you can see the major part of th rhizome with the crown grows vertically with horizontal shoots.
This is just my opinion and may make absoloutly no difference to the way it grows
In any case good luck with your rhizome and hopefully you get a nice yield to put fresh in a brew. I will be using my small yield from last years in a brew this week some time
cheers Brad
