Dark beer or light?

Post #1 made 14 years ago
As the title suggests, which do you prefer dark or light beer?

I like dark beers, stouts, Porters and the occasional Irish red :)

I do like pale beers, I make a nice cream ale for the summer. But if it was 1 beer, it would have to be a dark beer.

I have always preferred the light beers as all of the dark ones I have tried Guinness etc have not agreed with me or I have thought they tasted foul.

Having been to a few case swaps here in Adelaide and having the opportunity to taste some different dark beers, coffee porters etc, I am looking forward to brewing a couple near the end of our summer for enjoyment over winter.

Although giving the choice I'll nearly always go for the light beer. (No wheat beers though! bleargh :nup: )

This is a difficult question.

I like beer, but what kind of beer depends on many factors, like the weather, time of day, week, year, etc.

So yes I like dark beer, I like light beer (not lite or light beer of course another topic of dicussion I'm sure), but not at the same time and even all the time.

So, I think the poll needs more options.

I really like both

I find its much easier to make a good dark beer than a good pale beer though

Looks like I'll be drinking with housecat :)

While I appreciate most beers, there are many I'd never brew.

With dark beers, stout is too heavy and rich for me though I'll have one occasionally and enjoy it. Porter and Munich Dunkell's, I find too one-dimensional. Schwarzbier, I do brew and love the light complexity - I find it a very interesting and enjoyable beer.

With light beers, I'd never dream of brewing a wheat beer or a sour beer though, like stout, I might find the occasional taste interesting. A dry, not fruity, kolsch can be great. Pale ales (English and American) I will often go, "Yum!". IPA's, when balanced, yum though I haven't been able to steal a great recipe so far.

The most amazing beers for me are the really rare lager, Munich Helles, Dortmunder, or Pilsners that are refreshing but incredibly well-balanced and complex. The annoying thing about these beers is that you have to wait so long to see if you've cracked it. (A few commercial brands produce a good batch occasionally but I haven't found anything yet that is consistent.)

A hard poll to answer but without it containing all beer styles in existence, I can't see a way that you could have written it better hashie. Good on you!

Good poll hashie.
I voted for pale as it is what I drink most. I do enjoy trying all beers though but find I can only really drink 1 or 2 dark beers at a time (which isn't always a bad thing).
I have been brewing ambers lately and am enjoying the slightly darker beer.

cheers wiz

I went to a local beer festival last night and sampled the whole range from light to dark. The wife had to drag me out at 11 o'clock

Now last night I loved any beer    :drink:

This morning I'm not so sure :headhit: :headhit: :headhit:

Ha ha, good on you Yeasty.

I'm at the opposite end of the scale. My wife and I are doing Ocsober. So I am very clear headed this morning :)

No Octoberfest where I live :( so a good chance to give my body a rest. 4 days in and so far so good.

I'm hoping at the end of the month I have greater appreciation for hoppy/malty goodness :)

My mate did dry July, he had never drunk as much in a month as he did in dry July. I bloody sponsored him too! I guess it didn't help that he flew over from Perth to visit me during that month and I had kegs of homebrew!
