Moving

Post #1 made 10 years ago
Just a note. I've been quite quiet for quite a while now. Lots going on in my life. I'm in a long, drawn out process of moving from Healdsburg to Santa Rosa, CA. Not a great distance; only ~15 miles. But I have a lifetime of accumulation of what I consider treasure.. and it's difficult to part with. We are downsizing. Arggh. There are other things happening that are requiring a lot of attention as well. So, I'll continue to be quiet for another couple of weeks.. and then it might be "Katy, bar the doors".

One of the things I'm just about to complete is the finish work on the old garage. It's a two car unit that I had someone sheetrock for me. I did add a 220v circuit for my electric brewing. This is new to me, but I still have my conventional BIAB as well as conventional 3v. I've finished painting and getting the rest of the electrical in place. One of the things I did in the "new" house is to install LED lighting in both the kitchen and the dining area. Wow, is that great lighting. It's all recessed and puts out a metric ton of light for far less energy consumption. That said, I'm considering doing the same in the garage. I may only do a section at a time due to the general expense.

Now comes the planning of the workshop and the brewing parts of the space. I'd like for once in the 40+ years of our marriage to be able to put one car in the garage.. so, I'll have some planning to do. I'll have to do this before I begin sorting thru my crap.. er. strike that.. make it treasures. Four piles... toss, donate, sell, keep. Oh, what have I gotten myself into.

Anyhow, cheers folks.. I'll be back

Boo, I certainly feel your pain. I have been "moving", for almost a year now. This market has been brutal, and it took basically forever to sell my condo. Now we're in OCD saving mode, and I probably won't be brewing for a while (unless I can get friends to fund me). I'll be in your position in about 4-5 mos (hopefully). Or, at the very least I hope to know where I will be living next so that I can plan ahead. Good luck!

Wow, Rick.. that sounds like a LOT of moving to me. Are you in a temporary location now? We bought my wife's family's house about 7 years ago and started the remodel to move into. It's much smaller and has FAR less storage then the Hbg property.. which is why we didn't move then. Tooooo much stuff to get rid of... so, we rented it out. We've had, basically, one tenant in that time. Needed a bit of repair.. but, overall, it is in good condition. I feel your pain (back atcha :) ) Two of my son's do a lot of moving. One is career USAF and is FINALLY moving back to the states in a few months.. The other son is an airline pilot and has to move somewhat frequently until he gets enough seniority to have a 'home base". Lord willing, this will be our LAST move.

For now, I get to stay put ... for a few mos at least until closing. Then, yeah ... I'll have to move to a temporary place. Either my gf's apt while I store all of my belongings (while having a super long commute to work). Or, a friend of mine lives pretty close to where I work, and told me I could stay there. I can't say this friend is very dependable though, so I might not even bother no matter how convenient the location. If we're super lucky, we will be able to move into a house before I even have to leave ... crossing my fingers for this outcome.

We found a house that we like, but don't have the funds to put down an offer yet, very close but no cigar. I expect we will lose out on this particular house, but that's not stopping me from saving every penny. Who knows, it could stay on the market a while if we're lucky. If we lose this one, we'll be in great shape for the next.

Good luck to you as well, I hope you don't miss too many of your treasures. I'm currently selling many of my collectibles on ebay. They were investment items, but I had hoped to hang onto them for much longer for maximum returns. Letting go is tough, as I can be a bit of a hoarder, but I aim to live a minimalist life after this move. All I need is my "brewery", a gym, work shop, and a man-cave ... I'm sure the rest of where I end up will become a shoe closet at some point. :D She likes her fashion, what can I say ... storage is a must for us, but mostly for her.

Good luck to your boys as well, many of my friends are in the USAF ... some of them I don't get to see very often.

Ha, Thanks Rich.. that's rich. I do a lot of wood carving and Santa's are one of my main subjects. Most people look at them and say the Santa's look like me. I guess when you look at yourself a number of times a day.. it get's burned into the memory when making cuts in the wood.. I shaved my beard off after about 43 years.. so, I don't look like Santa anymore :D

HbgBill. I too feel your pain. Our house has been on the market for the past 8 months. We had originally hoped to sell quickly and build a new house. With everything that has gone on since listing our house we are going to have to rent for a year before getting our new place. We are just hammering out the final details to officially sell this house. Preparing for the move just got more complicated with me breaking 3 ribs yesterday. I wanted to do some brewing before the move but probably won't be able to now.
