My first NoChill

Post #1 made 12 years ago
Hello guys,

today i managed to brew my first no chill batch. I had some troubles with the siphon, as i wanted to start it by filling the tubing with Star San (now they sell it in Romania too  ) and, with the copper racking cane i made in the wort, let the Star San solution flow. I could not make it work this way so i literally sucked it  In the future i will try to fill the whole siphon (cane and silicone tubing) with sanitizer before i put it in the wort as i am affraid of sucking on that hot wort...

Before the wort i put some hot water in to the cube to clean it, and after that i put some water in a glass. In the glass i saw the sediment from the attached picture. Should i worry? Or can be just limestone from my hard water? The water did not had any smell.

Now i just have to wait for the wort to cool and pitch the yeast.

bionut,

Good luck! I hope you were sanitized with all that fooling around you did? As you get more experienced with the procedure you will satisfied and mystified as to how well it works!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Thanks Bob!

I don't understand your question (english is not my native language), are you talking about starting the siphon with my mouth? I think that the hot wort sanitized the hose... Before sucking on the hose i used only Star San solution for starting the siphon effect, but it didn't work. The racking cane was sterilized also.

I tried the star San method too. It didn't work for me either. Another I heard was to put your finger over the hose and put the syphon in the wort. When you take your finger off the hose it starts the syphon. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it works. It would depend on how deep the wort is in the pot compared to the syphon I guess.

Sorry excuse my base brewing terminology, by siphon I meant racking cane. So as you put the racking cane in the wort hold your finger over the tube. When you take your finger off the tube the wort rushing up the racking cane will start the siphoning. That's the theory anyway. I hope I explained that better.
Cheers.

Now i undertsand. I thought that you mean to submerge almost the whole siphon in wort to be filled with wort and the hold the finger on the tubing. As i brew in a keg i am not sure that the presure from the wort is enough to start the siphon ( in a 50 kg keg i brew ~20-25 l of wort), but i will try it.

Let me know if it works or not

I know the design, i have a T siphon that i use when i chill my wort. I could not find the materials for making a heat resistent one. Silicone tubing is hard to find in small quantities, and for the 10 mm one that i bought from my homebrewing shop i can't find a metal T. I think that the smallest copper tee i found was 15 mm. I have no idea what else could i use.

This morning i transfered the wort from the cube to the fermentor and now it's bubbling hard and the smell at the airlock is nice, so i think that my no chill worded well, but i will know for sure after i drink it :D

I'd love to skip the chilling step in the future using this method, because the summer is very hot in here and my water can not chill the wort very quickly. Time is not my best frient either, because i am a student in Bucharest and i have to come home (80 km) to brew.
