Just noticed today was the 10,000th registered member! :champ:

Do they get a prize by the way?

Thanks for posting this mally.

A lot of the more recent members are spammers unfortunately who must have shared a script or something re answering our beer-related entry questions. I'll have to re-investigate and/or increase the entry requirements and also do another bulk delete of members.

I'll post back here when done but it is not a priority for now. Once done, don't be surprised if we lose 500 or more dodgy and inactive members.

We brewers always enjoy a celebration so the actions above will just result in us being able to celebrate this milestone several times.

:)

In light of the above, I was just looking at some new strategies and activated reCaptcha from Google. I've tested it a few times and it may not only confuse bots but perhaps also real members.

As a new user, I would be looking for a second word or number but there is not one. So, "both of the words," are not to be found. Secondly, there is no, "text field underneath". The text field is actually the one above "Privacy and Terms" to the right.

Probably not the best entrance we can use to a site that has a lot of focus on correct information and clear terminology.

If that screenshot is WYWU, then it's not bad at all. Some of the Captcha's that I've seen on other sites were terrible. It is odd that they specify "both" words, when it's 1 number and no words at all. Would this only be used for registering, or everytime you want to post?

They only have to do the Captcha once when registering Jack. Of the 16 new regos in the last 16 hours or so, all seem genuine so I'll leave this system in place for a while and then rotate to something else. A confirmation email apparently fixes a lot of spammers as well so after new site structure is laid out, we might write an informative confirmation email, that tells the new member where to start as well as confirming their membership.

I'll also do a major cull once the new site structure is out but send out a mass email first explaining what changes have been made along with some guidelines for when we regard an account as becoming inactive.
