frozen beer

Post #1 made 16 years ago
hey fellas
I had a ipa fermenting while I was on vacation so it would be ready for my empty keg when I got home :D Well got home Thur racked to keg and forced carbed Friday morning at this point I realized i had forgotten to put any clearing agent in the boil (really cloudy)not a major problem my stomach has never refused a beer due to appearance ;)
So I took a couple liters over to a buddies house and stuck them in his freezer (they had gotten warm while waiting on the wife) well I forgot about 1 of the bottles. As I am leaving I took it out and put it in the fridge to thaw. I came back over the next morning and the beer was extremely clear with a lot of sediment so i was curious how this would affect the beer.Went home and froze a bottle ,thawed and did a taste test :D In my opinion any experiment involving beer is a good experiment :D

Cloudy beer - nice and bitter, still probably a little green ,good head retention, going to be nice in a couple of weeks if it last that long

Frozen beer - really good , it took some of the bite out of the hops , mellowed out some of the young flavor , wife really enjoyed this beer compared to the cloudy version, bearly any head and lower carbonation

I was kinda shocked that the frozen beer had tasted so good
sorry bout the long post its 2:30 in the morning ,at work, and bored

Good little experiment there Jimmy, it's always good to hear about experiments and there outcomes, afterall that's how we got biab.
Last time I left a beer in the freezer it exploded. It was a commercial beer though. I wonder if that makes a difference with freezing live beer vs pasteurized?

I would think it is all up to both the pressure rating of the bottle (I think industry amber is rated at 22 psi) and the amount you filled it. This is an awesome experiment though if you don't mind having to clean out the freezer if it goes wrong ;)

SacSoul I was extremely concerned about it going wrong, had my wife reminding me that I was the one that was going to clean the freezer if it went wrong.I put the bottle in a long plastic container. The bottles were 1L swing top, filled to 3/4 of the way, capped on foam.It was fun and still amazed at the taste and how much sediment there was.

You have inspired me to give this a shot. I have a few PET bottles I can try this with on my next bottling round.
