Any Port drinkers here

Post #1 made 13 years ago
I recently got a port keg for my birthday and aging some brown brothers top up tawny port. It's great to sip between home brewed beers while chugging on a wee willam cigar. It holds 20 litres. The diffence in taste even after 6 months of aging is remarkable. Anyone else here into port?

I'd love to be "into" port but $'s restrict me.

That said I bought my father a bottle of Penfolds Grand Father Port and a Great Grandfather Port for his 70th birthday. My fingers are crossed that there might be a sip left for me when he's gone. Although if they are empty, I will know he enjoyed them.

Great looking cask!

Any port in a storm!

Having said that, I like port. Unfortunately I don't have the room atm to have a keg, like you do, so I can age some port.

I got some Cocos Island port a while back. The most expensive port I have had so far but damn it is dangerously smooth. It is really easy to drink and I am amazed that I still have some left!

Hashie, there are plenty of bargains to be had not far from you. Loads of cheap port/tokay etc from around Glenrowan and Rutherglen. Producers like Baileys, Morris and Campbells have an enviable reputation for fortifieds.
Just buy their cheapest (from the winery you can buy by the litre) and by blending a couple with brandy and keeping it in an small (3 litre) oak barrel (a dime a dozen) will add a depth of flavour that will stand the test of even the most critical judge.

I have a mate who used to work in the city and he splashed out on an expensive port once on a night out. Thing is the rest of the night made me forget how the port tasted.

I also used to have a bottle every xmas day then retire to a quiet corner for an hour or two :sneak: but the other half has stopped all that and i now have to be sociable

Saying that I've just remembered I bought a bottle from a vineyard when I was in Perth 3 years ago..hang on a MO!

Just dug it out..

Its a Edgecombe Brothers(Swan Valley) "Liqueur Shiraz" aged 25 years (+ 3) god knows what it will be like, looks to be Tawny through the bottle..

Any fortified with that sort of age will have a copper tinge to it. Not necessarily a tawny though.

I remember having a white port from Margaret River about 30 years ago. It was a rich mouthfull once you got past the fact that it was almost clear. Only grape skin contact (during pressing) and a bit of seepage from the cask give colour but it still feels weird.

Your absolutely right BO, I can get port by the litre just up the road at Echuca. There is a Portery?? in the Port of Echuca that has the same port in many different barrels. I remember 1 was an old JD barrel, there are a dozen or more, so the port takes on some of the flavour of what was previously in the barrel. Makes for an interesting drink, but not my cup of tea.
They also sell (3l) small to (20l)large barrels for home use, their small being around $130 dry.

With 4 kids, 3 cats and a mortgage on 1 income, it's too much of a luxury to get the finances for. However, one day...

I love port on a cold winter night with a slice of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Yum!

In the US, I buy Six Grapes, which is blended and not too expensive.

I'm trying to imagine having a keg of port in my cellar! Wow!

Three weeks ago all my kegs blew at once and I had no beer. I scrounged around, normally there are some bottles in the fridge that I've archived or been given by other brewers or left over from a case swap - the latter are sometimes a bit dodgy as some people can make really weird stuff for the swaps "Feral Jockstrap smoked IPA imperial Poodleheffer" - but no luck. Nothing.

So I walked round to the local Liquorland, and just couldn't bring myself to pay 20 clams for a six pack of James Squire, and even the 3 tall bottles of Henninger for $10 didn't suit my mood.

So I got a 2L wine box of a port-lookalike that can't even be called Port (It's labelled Tawny) and a 2L bottle of lemonade - Note, Australian "lemonade" is, as in the UK, similar if not identical to Sprite or seven up - and I got hammered on port and lemon just like Aunty Mavis used to drink.

And I tell you what, it was a very nice change. Also plenty of change from $15. I didn't get through the whole 2L box thankfully for my brain the next day. :headhit:

After a few months with my port keg I'm having a wonderful time sipping between beers. There's 2 problems I don't like however and that is 1. "Angels share" ( where there is slight evaporation of the keg some the apparently the port angels get) the positive is a slightly higher alcohol blend. Which is fair enough I suppose.
But the other reason is it costs a bit to upsize your pants and shorts when you go up a size in a weight department.
