Cigars and Beer

Post #1 made 13 years ago
It is a little late here but I decided I could get a quick smoke in tonight especially since I am tring Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot Barleywine for the first time tonight.
I figured such a big beer would hold it's own with a mild flavored cigar. Smoking an Olivia Series G Cigarillo(4x38) since I did not have an hour for a robusto.

Are there any other cigar smokers on the board?

Oh, most definitely !

There are very few things more enjoyable than a good Cubano. I smoke Cohiba Siglo IV most of the time but have become rather partial to a Cuaba Distinguidos of late. My humidor has about 7 different types at anyone time. I do enjoy a Robusto but tend to go for a Corona.

I brewed an Oatmeal Stout that just cries out for a Siglo :yum:

If you are short of time, or just fancy something different, try NUBs. They are basically the business end of cigar but without the length. Have a look here http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/advanced_sear ... =&x=11&y=9

Being in the states, I have never had a cuban cigar. The Cohiba Siglo IV looks like a great cigar.
Lately, I have favored more of the mild to medium cigars.
I have smoked a few NUBS and they are good cigars but I tend to like to try different types and sizes at different times.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the embargo. Never mind, you can console yourself on some great Dominican Republic leaf or some great cigars from Nicaragua or Honduras. There are some fantastic cigars from all three regions (providing the US hasn't pissed them off as well).

Some examples of cigars that I like and think are worth seeking out;
Dom Rep
Arturo Fuente Chateau Fuente Belicoso
La Aurora Preferidos Sapphire
Santa Damiana Corona
Nicaragua
Cain Sun Grown 660
La Rica Robusto
Honduras
Don Ramos Epicure (No. 19)

Happy hunting. :smoke:

I have tried some of the Arturo Fuente line and have not been dissappointed. The Cain line is very good also.
I will have to look into some of the others.
I am a new cigar smoker just like I still consider myself a new homebrewer.

I am lucky that my wife knows me very well. She will buy a different cigar when she's out and about, so that I can try something that I probably wouldn't choose for myself. After all, she was the one who set me on the road to good cigars. Originally, she bought me a humidor and a box of Partagas Petit Coronas for my birthday a few years ago (I hadn't smoked for 20yrs but she knew I enjoyed the occassional cigar).

But then this is the woman who, many years earlier, bought my first brew kit (without prompting), and to this day will bring home grains and hops for me.

Yep, she's a "keeper"

Wow
I occasionally would smoke a cigar with my brother-in-law but I never bought any cigars. So a couple years ago my wife surprised me with a humidor, lighter, double bladed cutter and about 15 different cigars as a Christmas present. Been smoking ever since.
As far as the beer that was all me  . I like making things and it is always nice when someone taste one of my brews and says "Wow, that is a good beer".

I actually gave up smoking cigarettes out of respect for my wife. She didn't smoke and I was smoking 60-70 a day :argh:

It was 20 years after giving up that she bought me the gift. I still only smoke occassionally (maybe every couple of weeks). I don't smoke in the house (only in a beer garden or my man-cave).

My wife and I both smoked cigarettes for years before we both stopped. I was really surprised when she bought the cigars and humidor but smoking 1 every three or four weeks can't be that bad.

Oh and I only smoke outside also.

Do you age your cigars in your humidor before you smoke or do you smoke them soon after you purchase? I don't have anything in particular that I do just wondering how you do yours.

I'm sure that amount can't hurt you.Everything(except beer)in moderation right?Actually I wish I could trust myself to smoke one once in a while, but I am afraid to inhale anything anymore!

I rarely smoke straight from the box (except for quality assurance purposes you understand). I like to let the flavours take on a rounder flavour by sharing the air with a piece of mature Spanish cedar and other cigars. My humidor has a divider with 3 shelves (it can store 300 in total), so I can put a box in fresh and place it at the bottom and just forget about it for a year. You can only do this once you have reasonable amount in stock (much like wine).
I buy a few Maduras that already have significant age but even then I like to let them settle down to a constant temperature and humidity.

I'm in the same boat Lylo. I used to love me a good Don Diego or Macanudo but am afraid to try one anymore. I quit smoking 2 years ago (after 2 packs a day for almost 30 years) and am afraid one cigar would put that tobacco monkey on my back again. Better safe then sorry I guess, especially when cigs are almost $10.00 USD a pack!

Lylo and Todd I know what you mean and I also had that concern but for me cigars were different. I definitely do not inhale ( I believe that would be painful to say the least because cigars are strong. It is more puff and blow ) but I do enjoy the flavor. I also have no desire to smoke a cigarette. They smell really bad to me and I don't see me ever smoking them again.

Beer
That is a large humidor for sure. 300 cigars could be a small fortune. Right now I have two small 25 cigar humidors and that is about all I can afford to stock. I do want to be able to age some for future smoking. Cigars do get better with age. My brother-in-law told me about some that were found in a cave that had the right conditions that were about 100 hundred years old. Needless to say I won't be smoking any of these. :nup:

The oldest one I had was a gift from a (very rich) friend. It was 50 years old Punch Double Corona Madura and had been stored in near perfect conditions. We had one each with a few shots of my Herradura Seleccion Anejo Tequila (that's sippin' liquor). It was really good but.....I really struggled to notice a dramatic difference to my better Habanos. Yes it was rounded and had a "dark" richness about it, but it didn't wow me.
To my taste, my 2 year olds are excellent now.

My advice would be to get a good digital humidifier. Maintaining cigars at a constant temperature and humidity really makes ALL the difference. Even minor variations will affect the ageing process. I originally had an Adorini desk top humidor that had a tobacco leaf laquered into the lid. It looked fantastic (my wife has great taste). But the temperature was varying too much and I found cigars weren't ageing well. Also because of the variation, I got some spot mould on some. So I invested in a better hygrometer and ultimately a better twin-skin humidor that now sits in a locked cupboard (giving it a little more insulation). Now I have beautifully aged Habanos.
While you are right it could cost a small fortune, I save money by never buying retail unless I have something specific in mind for a special occassion. I have a contact in Spain who sells (to me) at cost (plus a bit) or I buy Duty Free on my various soujourns. One of my favourite places for good, well stored cigars is Doha International in Qatar (just select them from the rear of the shelves). There are some really good retailers (duty free to visitors) in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. The places I found in Singapore are a rip-off.

It's gorgeous. I had tried several Anejos over the years but this one struck me as "perfect" for my pallette. Luckily, I have a ready supply (although it's far from cheap) and most Poms think that any Tequila is just fire-water, so I don't see my supply drying up anytime soon

Empty bottles are depressing. I try never to have any

I don't see me drinking any of that anytime soon. It appears it is around 300.00 US dollars a bottle here.
Well anyway, I am more of a whiskey guy so being close to Tennessee and Kentucky works good. I even toured the Jack Daniels Distillery last summer.

It's worth every cent, trust me.
However, being in that neck of the woods there is plenty of home-grown talent. I am a bit partial to the Gentleman Jack and Beam's Choice.
