Happy Solstice.
For us in the South, that would be the Winter Solstice (Christmas?) and for those in the North, Summer Solstice.
To celebrate I will be making a Golden Ale today.
Does anyone else celebrate?

I don't celebrate it myself, but I read about a celebration held in Tasmania. There are some pretty intrepid guys down there that would have a celebration of 'Ozmas' around the winter solstice. They would lug a heap of traditional christmas-type food in to the Lake Meston hut way out on the central plateau.
Sounds the goods to me; roast turkey, plum pudding and custard, mulled wine in freezing weather and miles from the nearest road.
Maybe when the kids are older....

The positive for us in the southern hemisphere is that the daylight hours start getting longer now
I'm over driving to work in the dark and leaving work in the dark!
Good luck with your golden ale hashie!

I celebrated by going to the Katoomba Winter Magic festival last weekend and then having a heated pool/spa party (36/38C) afterwards.
The beer was supplied from my new 4 tap kegerator
The Scottish Sour was very popular!

A week early stux? Good to see some others acknowledge the day.
Not being a fan of sour beers, I'm not sad I missed the day
A hot tub on the other hand...if only my wife would let me buy one.

I don't like the sour beer either, truth is, it wasn't supposed to be sour
But there were 2 other beers on tap, a Dunkel and a Tettnang Helles and a Soda water tap.
And Winter Magic is basically a winter solstice festival, but they have it when they have it

My brew club has a summer solstice brew each year. We meet in a local park and brew and trade glasses of our beer. I put on a BIAB demo for new members. I brew two beers just to rub it in that I can do it. This year's Summer Solstice brew will be a California Common and a Peat Smoked Porter. I will bring a keg of Wit Beer made with coriander and bitter orange peel. The club supplies the barbeque's and charcoal, We bring our own food. Party now because the days are going to get shorter! http://www.cwdb.org/

I enjoyed a bottle of Mikkeller Black Hole - Barrel Aged Edition (in Red Wine barrels!). What a flavour sensation. It was bloody delicious! The missus had the Rekorderlig Winter Cider (apple, cinnamon and vanilla). They recommend that you drink it warm, so she warmed it on the stove, and that was freaking tasty too! 2 very wintery drinks for a dark, wintery day.
