1st biab attempt

Hi - I'm awaiting the grain to arrive before starting my first maxi-biab attempt and am looking for some reassurance I suppose that I am on the right track with my process.
I have an 18l electric urn with a 30cm diameter and about 5 cm of dead space above the max line. Having used the maxi-biab calc I expect to be able to fit 15l of water and 5.7kg of grain into the mash. After mash I will sparge with just boiled water upto roughly 7 or 8 l to take the urn back to capacity. After the 90min boil I should have roughly 17l of wort to transfer to my FV which I should be able to top up to 20l and obtain a SG of 1.016. The recipe is an American style hoppy IPA and before transferring the wort I will use a chillder to take the temp down to pitching temp.

Hoping that I have most things covered but if anything glaring is missing please let me know.

I'm not a Maxi brewer but I have noticed one thing. You state your S.G as 1.016 I'm assuming its a typo.

I'm sure a Maxi brewer will pick this thread up for you and give you the :thumbs: if its ok

I've just noticed that you've used the Maxi-Biab Calc. Can you attach it to your post? It will speed up getting an answer if you can.

I've altered the brew length figure to give you a volume into fermenter of 20L (19.98) which is what you are looking for I think.
This gives you a grain bill of 5.3kg which according to the Maxi page on the sheet will give you a mash volume of 19.09L. Your pot I recon has a total volume of 21.5L including the 5cm above the 18L max line so you should be ok. I haven't adjusted your efficiency figure.

After mash out you will have 12L leaving you with 6L for sparging if you are just taking it up to 18L altho the calculator is assuming 19L.

I've also tweaked the hop bill which now reflects the original recipe IBU. Its a bit Higher by a couple of points but this may be due to formulas.

Have a look and see if it makes sense :pray:

Yeasty you're a star thanks for the help. I am going to tone down the bittering in the recipe which is a bit high but other than that I'm hopeful this will turn out well.

I would actually set the mash limit to 1cm or so, but you know your urn better than I

The calc is saying to reserve 1.6L of the water before adding your grain, then add that back. Good idea that ;)

I'm a bit concerned about boilovers with a 3cm boil limit, but I guess you'll find out ;)

The hop estimates are higher for the maxi biab because the average SG during the boil is 1.074 which will reduce hop utilization

Thanks for the input gents. Yes it makes sense that a higher sg will reduce hop utilisation so maybe I won't cut back too much. I want to avoid a boil over if poss I've heard that a cold water spray just before works well.

when the protiens threaten a boil-over... you can skim, a hair dryer, spray water on it, turn the heat down during hot break, use larger pot, or foam control.

Yes, it depends on your lid. Mine clears the mash if the mash is 1cm below the lip
