Using Maxi-BIAB with BeerSmith 2

Post #1 made 14 years ago
I've been trying to work out how to use BeerSmith 2 with Maxi-BIAB

I had created a separate Maxi-BIAB Mash Profile, but I think I've worked out how to get it to work with the standard BIAB profiles :)
Maxi-BIAB 50L (38L NC) Equipment.bsmx
This is an equipment profile for my Maxi-BIAB 50L pot.

I fill 2 17L cubes of wort (34L), which I dilute to about 42.4L, which gives me a double batch, ie 38L of Beer :)

I have a 49L mash limit, and a 40.2 L boil limit

To scale any recipe to Maxi-BIAB, open the recipe, then press the scale recipe and select a Maxi-BIAB equipment profile.

Then select a BIAB Mash profile

Then go to the "Water Volumes" page

You will probably see that your "Mash Volume Needed" is red dotted, as is your "Mash Tun Volume"

The solution is simple. Modify the "Kettle Top Up" field so that you are taking away some of your Mash Volume so that your Mash Volume is less than your Mash Tun Volume!

Simple ;)

Now,

The "Tot Mash Water" is your Dough-In Volume, remember to reserve some water so that you can add it back to make Dough-in easier

The "Est Boil Vol" is your Start Of Boil Volume, and you should add sparge water or water to your kettle to achieve this after mashout

The "Post Boil Vol" is your Target End Of Boil Volume, and you should add sparge water or boiling water through out the boil to achieve this

Rather than relying on the fermenter dilution volumes, its better to use a Dilution Scaler tool to actually work out the correct volume of post-boil dilution water required.

Now, the only other real trick is to create Maxi-BIAB profiles which suit your equipment. The Maxi-BIAB Calculator can help with that.

When you No Chill you end up with less Kettle Trub, but more Fermenter Trub, and that's the primary difference between the standard BIAB equipment profiles, and my ones

It would probably be nice if BeerSmith automatically adjusted the Kettle Top Up, because when you have a 70L pot and you need 75L for a standard biab, I'm sure everyone just adds 5L...

The concern would be when you go below say, 6 L/KG, or 3.5L/KG for Maxi-BIAB

Been meaning to read this thread since you started it stux. Always love seeing what you have come up with :P

The top up water for kettle seems to simply deduct that amount from the initial strike voluem. It then assumes that you will add that amount back in on the boil instructions of the brew steps sheet where it says, 'Add water to achieve boil volume of x.'

Is the profile working for you okay? eg 'Brewhouse Efficiency' setting etc.

Cheers,
Pat

Are you a "Goodwill Brewer?" Pay forward and Buy Some BIPs ;)
