FWIW, I brewed two beers with that batch of yeast and had no problems, but I knew I was gambling. The recall had just happened and I didn't have time to exchange for a replacement batch with my on-line supplier.

I noticed that the local brew-on-premises store where I sometimes get supplies from was still stocking this batch of yeast, so it looks like the recall didn't reach everywhere in the distribution chain.

Another good reason to harvest yeast.

I use Nottingham almost exclusively, but only buy 2-3 packets per year. The rest is re-used cake or harvested and stored yeast.

Thanks for the heads up Shib.

hashie,
how long do you store yeast for?

I've stored for 3 months without issue.

I use a 300ml glass jar, 1/2 fill it with yeast slurry, top it off with cool boiled water whack a lid on it and put it in the fridge.

I used to change the water every couple of days, because the water changes colour from the residual beer in the yeast slurry. But I found this made it go off within a few weeks. By leaving the diluted beer on top of the yeast keeps the yeast healthy longer, for me at least.

When I open a jar I smell it, if it smells like yeasty beer, it's good to go. You'll know if it's no good!

Hope this helps Shib.

You make a starter with the glass jar right?

Do you pour off most of the water, then give the slurry a swirl and dump into your wort starter?

I pour off the water, after making sure it all smells good. I then put some wort on top of it, give it a swirl and dump it all into the fermenter.

I've never made a starter. (What a rebel!)
