I'm working my way back through the latest topics here on BIABrewer, saw your post and thought to myself, "I have spent several hours writing back to HomeMade's prior questions already but haven't heard back from him on quite a few of these posts."
I could spend more time replying to the question you are asking in this thread giving you what I think is a very good initial answer but seeing as you haven't replied to posts I and others have made to you recently in other threads, I am worried that what we have written so far to you is not 'doing it' for you. If not, then you need to reply in those other threads and tell us why. If yes, then you need to reply in those other threads and tell us why

No one ever does as instructed in that post but it was written for a reason and I imagine that once the new site structure is put in place, we'll all get pulled up on some of the instructions in that notice. In other words, acknowledge people's replies and put a tick beside your thread if it has been answered.

not sure what u mean in your opening statement but I do understand what you say after that
Initially I thought hey what's he on about I've answered all those threads....but I thought I'd best double check. I knew I had not answered one but I have a draft saved which I am not happy with as I think it rambles and I repeat myself abit but I think I'll just post it anyway now.
I usually click the view new post link each time I pick up my iPad, I don't usually log out so this seems an easy way to refresh things...but today i didn't see anything new that u could be referring to so I clicked the view your posts link and noticed a few that didn't have my name as the last post. I think there were three from you.
One I explained above, one I definitely haven't read and one seemed familiar but I am not confident I have read also.
Therefore I am sorry if I am not following the site rules I will try to improve, and I apologise for not responding to you and others yet. I will get back to those posts, maybe I won't post so many at once in the future so I can better keep up with them all.
I think I have been very diligent in thanking people and expressing satisfaction/requesting more info where appropriate. But I will check and adjust my approach if necessary.
I can see that you put a lot of time into this site and I appreciate your attention to detail and willingness to challenge conventional wisdom and get to the truth, eg: your comments on hops formulas and errors in other software have really clarified my confusion on that topic, that's why I come back.

. You are actually very good in your responses. I think in the last week there has just been a bit of a cluster of non-responses which can be a bit off-putting and I think think you scored me at the end of the cluster as it were

I have to go out tonight but where I'm going has 150 lashes so I'll have another taste to remind myself of the beer and we'll see if we can come up with a plan tomorrow.

HM, I was pretty surprised at tasting 150 Lashes last night. I could have sworn this beer, when I have tasted it in the past, was like a slightly subdued James Squire Golden Ale. The one I tasted last night had no hint of Amarillo hops but it did have Pride of Ringwood and I would have called it an Aussie lager rather than an ale.
I was that surprised, I bought another bottle tonight and, same thing, although the last one had a slight hint of what I would think of as Styrian Goldings hops. Weird
.
Come to think of it, the original James Squire Golden Ale soon became 'blanded down'. I'm wondering if they have done the same here? I don't mind the beer as it's still interesting but am very confused that I can't detect any American type hops.

I am brewing with some buddies, we have all chosen a style of beer we like and we are brewing them in turn. Results and costs of each brew are shared between us all, this is the reason I need to have 50L VIF for each brew if possible.
Thats interesting what you say about the 150 Lashes, I have to admit I have not drunk this for a long time, I was sitting with one of my brewing bud's on Sunday and he brought two bottles over and said he liked it and this is the 'type' he wanted to brew as our pale ale. After reading the label I was disappointed about the hop flavour, I think it said "...a concoction of hops..." but as you say, I didnt dislike the beer either and thought why not. As the Pale Ale was his choice in our consortium I just jumped onto the site and checked if there was anything listed under receipes, as there wasn't so I decided to ask if anyone had a recipe on hand for it.
Given our lack of knowledge, our original idea was to brew each chosen style choice from the BCS book as we knew that the receipe had originally produced an award winning brew and therefore should be good, if we reproduce it well enough
The only problem is we have never tried any of the originals so therefore do not know what it was supposed to taste like so we can judge if we had done a reasonable job. Since deciding we have started to purchase commercial beers in each style where we can to give us an up to date feel for what we might be getting.
BCS has American and English pale ales but no Aussie pale ales so we are not quite sure where 150 Lashes sits as it does not appear as a commercial example on the BJCP guidelines either.
Anyway, thats the history of how we got here if you can follow. The original receipe we were going to follow was the EPA Special/Best/Premium Bitter. I think under the circumstances we should stick to that original plan and get adventurous once we have a few brews under our belt.

From your post above, I am suspecting that the version your mate wants of this beer is the non-passionfruity aroma/flavour version. He wants the clear, light coloured version with bugger-all aroma?
It's pretty ridiculous isn't it, that two totally different beers can be sold under the same label. I think I have a very good recipe for the non-passionfruit/no aroma style but would like to run it by some others. Can you wait until the end of the weekend for this?
Also, please confirm your mate actually wants the bland version of this beer. And finally, HM, what country are you from? Answering that last question helps more than you would think. (You've probably answered it somewhere before but putting it in your profile is always helpful.)

Hi PP,
Have updated my profile, I am a citizen of the lucky country!
I have posted 'somewhere'
what our schedule of brews is, basically we have taken 6 recipes from BCS and plan to brew them all before we get adventurous!
We are brewing a German Pils next then we will have a go at a Pale Ale, we are currently planning on the BCS English Pale Ale - Special/Best/Premium Bitter.
I think once we've worked our way through these some brews we will get something to compare to, at least our versions of those recipes.
So we are not planning to brew the Pale Ale for a few weeks and I guess we are happy to do anything that is recommended, the 150 Lashes was probably a comparison on its overall bitterness rather than flavour/aroma . If that makes sense, essentially we like big Pale Ales but find we don't want to drink many of them in a sitting therefore brewing something more mellow would suit our collective pallets but more flavour/aroma would be welcome.
I dont really want to put anyone to any trouble here, I just thought as it was a popular craft beer someone somewhere may have a devised a receipe for it. If not we are happy to go with the BCS EPA.

But, the recipe/name given to many commercial brews can often alter drastically. For example...
1. Matilda Bay Dark Lager (a Shwartzbier) became known as Dogbolter.
2. Prior to the above, Dogbolter was a high alcohol English Ale.
3. The same company that produced the above beers did the above name changes.
Hopefully this makes my question on the passionfruit/bland thing less strange.

Grabbed a carton for work , local had no fat yak which is our usual
Boring and tasteless, never again
Intact there has been couple of beers of late that aren't the same,
Weinstephan hefe used to be a beer I loved, doesn't seem to be what it used to be?
Rogers is another I enjoyed, had a bottle the other day and struggled to finish it

Without a side by side comparison it's hard to confirm, but I definitely feel that the standard James Squire brews dropped in quality at some point. The Amber Ale used to be a regular tipple for us, but we stopped bothering long ago when the recipe appeared to change. The alc/vol even dropped.
