Short on time but you would be very lucky to get 23 litres into the fermentor at 1.048 with that grain bill. Hold on...

If they are mashing with 10 and sparging with 10. That makes twenty, less the liquor retained by the grain. They'll have to top up with a lot into the fermentor (which you don't want to do) and this makes it even less likely that the 4.4 kg of grain will give them 23 litres at 1.048.

Something very dodgy going on there Dan I reckon???

[NOTE: They won't be more efficient with a sparge. Putting sparge water in at the start as we do in "pure BIAB" or "SMS (simultaneous mash and sparge brewing)" is just as efficient as adding it later. Search my posts for the word 'jeans' for full info ;).]

With the 20 Litres they used, that was in a series of steps way up in front of the book. Could be a misprint or some missing information - or misinterpreted on my behalf.

With the grain bill, I thought I'd need 5ish kg. I just figured they were being ultra efficient or something. Doesn't matter, I'll work out how much I need to bulk it up to get my desired OG.

The hops are okay referenced against the other recipe http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f57/munich- ... ell-83056/

Brewday will give a reasonable indication, so we'll see how the wort turns out - the proof is in the pudding as they say.

I didn't get to hack that recipe after all. My grain shop is having difficulty getting some particular Australian malts, so their stock of german malts has been hit hard.

Instead, I went with Munchen Grobes Bier out of Brewing Classic Styles, so still a Munich Helles.

og 1.048, 23Litres
ibu: 18
pilsener malt: 4.53kg
Munich Malt: 340g
31g Hellertau 4.0%AA for 60 mins
Wyeast 2124

note: the recipe itself is underhopped. Needs 44g of Hellertau 4.0AA and not the 31g listed. I was all rush and didn't check the aa on my packet and it was only 2.9%. So I underhopped what was an underhopped recipe, I realised just before flamout and put in what saaz I had. I'll fix the bitterness with some isohops for this brew, but will be more careful next time.
