the Dead Guy Ale came out very good!
Thanks MS for sharing your latest version. Definitely in the rotation...

BFM - Could you share details on your fermentation? I am most interested in the the yeast used and AA%. OG and FG?

Nice picture too! Thanks for sharing. You may know that I have been struggling with getting a 77% AA, so I will do so kind of step mash next time. Also, what was your mashing schedule like?

Sure MS –
Remember I use an 8 gallon kettle (30.3L) on the kitchen stove…
Perle 5.4%AA 1.28 ounces, Sterling 8.7%AA 1.01 ounces = 40 IBU(Tins)
I funnel / screen pour my wort into the fermenter – captures the leftovers and airs the wort pretty good.
I used BRY 97 West Cost Dry yeast - about 64F when pitched yeast (I did not rehydrate) two packs into my 3 gal glass fermenter. (added a little yeast energizer and nutrient left over from the great 2016 Braggot Experiment). Typically one or two more shakes (nice its only 3 gallons).
Put into the chamber at 65F (18C). My chamber was set to heat at 64F (17.8C)and cool at 66F (18.9C). The temperature very slowly shifted around the 65F mark (64.7F-67F, longest time sitting between 65-66F).
BIABacus – OG 1.065 and FG 1.016, Actual - 1.060 OG and 1.012 FG

EAW 70.7%
EIF 60.3%
apparent attenuation 79%, actual 65%
just under 3 gal to drink.

Brew4me - the beer color in your beer picture looks "spot on". :champ: Rogue Ales is a semi-local brewery for me here in Oregon, and "Dead Guy Ale" is a beer I drink fairly regularly. Sounds like Mad_Scientist has refined his recipe fairly well. (Is the taste close too...?) (Probably is close or MS wouldn't keep brewing it).

I have not had a chance to pick up some dead guy to do a side by side. When I do I will update here with my perspective.

MS - maybe there is something with the yeast energizer and nutrient also. I had that from the braggot - based on some mead recipe reading i used it to help push the fermenting along with all that honey...

OK, so today was the great "Dead Guy Taste Test Comparison" and it has been called a resounding success.
Color match was perfect.
Smell - could not note any real difference
Most importantly the blind taste test by 2 people noted only a small difference (both were able to select the dead guy) (did I mention small difference) - it was agreed that the difference was likely that I did not brew with the Rogue Oregon Hops (need to look into if I can get some)
So that's great, right? I mean statistically 2 people doing a blind taste test means... well anyway

By the third bottle comparison (that would be 6 bottles consumed for those not with it today) there clearly was no difference in taste. ;)

I will note (and honest I ain't braggin) my head was much better than Dead Guys... but then again one would expect my head to be better then a dead guys. (sorry for that degradation of beer analysis) :sneak:
