Recipe request - A non Lager Lager

Hi All,

I will be trying to brew a batch of very light summer ale for the wife (and friends) in a few months. And I am starting to do some research as to possible recipes?

She only like lagers. I do not have the equipment to brew / ferment a true lager so I am looking for a very light summer ale that will be close.

The best I have come up with is a SMASH based on a very light malt and a fairly flavourless hop.

Any thoughts?

Anyone else had any success brewing a light (designed to be served ice cold) summer ale.

I would go with a California Common and possibly grade it to be some lighter with the BIABacus software... First, it's a well balanced beer. Grading it smaller should keep the balance. Second it uses a Lager yeast that ferments in the low 60s (Fahrenheit). So it's easier to brew for those of us without fermentation chambers. A lager with some ale characteristics. May be as close as you can get, if you want a light, well balanced Lager and don't have good traditional temperature controls for fermentation on a normal lager (most ferment in the low 50s F). My two cents...

PS And if I was brewing this, it would have to be a spring or fall brew... Would be too hot in the summer for me to brew a California Common. And my fish tank heater (for water in garbage can surrounding fermenter) that I use for winter ales will likely make it too warm. So if you are waiting for a few months...brewing it may be a problem depending on your location.

PSS If the malt and hops seem still more flavor than you / she may want, the yeast could still be a good option, provided could be brewed at lower 60s F.

I will give each of the recipes a try. Can easily do a micro batch of each to see how they work out.. I need the practice, both with BIABacus and the brewing.
