SMASH recipe

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hi there,

Does anyone have a tried and tasted SMaSH recipe (single malt and single hops)?

I have access to cheap Weyermann Munich, Vienna and Pilsner malts and want to see how simply I can brew a simple beer.

Also one of the great local home brewers suggested that beginners should stick to simple (smash) beers so they can learn to differentiate the tastes between the different grains and hops. What do you think?

Cheers

My first all grain brew was a smash of Maris otter and Amarillo. Was a very tasty drop.

Weyerman pilsner is essentially interchangeable for an ale malt with a light malt character while Munich or Vienna will give you a more malty flavour. Any of these could make a good smash.

You could either buy a decent whack of hops and make a smash with the same hop and different grains to get a feel for them or use the same grain and vary the hops or a combination of the two. It's a great way to get a feel for ingredients when you're starting out.

Vienna makes a lovely malty, single malt beer. Pick your favourite hop to go with it.
Amarillo is a good one.

jube,

Smash is a very simple brew that does lead you to learn about the tastes and aromas of grains, hops and yeasts. You could spend the first few years brewing SMaSH and never repeat the tastes. I spent the first years brewing smashed and get smashed quite frequently to this day. All kidding aside. Split a batch and use a different yeast or a different hop. two beers with one brew session. Learning only stops with death. Keep your mind learning and you will never get old!
tap 1 Raspberry wine
tap 2 Bourbon Barrel Porter
tap 3 Czech Pilsner
tap 4 Triple IPA 11% ABV

Pipeline: Mulled Cider 10% ABV

Thanks for those tips...I'm looking to make a really simple beer (i.e. cheap) and in Hungary Amarillo is one of the most expensive hops. Does anyone have experience with Magnum or Aurora or Hallertauer Taurus hops?

Thanks

I made a nice pils with saaz and us05 that was a nice session beer. I wanted to see what us05 would produce. You could use hallertauer instead. Just set your ibu's to 20-30 and mash at 65c (I think). Very easy and pretty cheap.

I would be keen to see what a SMaSH with Aurora comes out like.

I have a pack of that in my freezer (it's described as "super styrian"). Usable for all additions as well (bittering, late & dry hopping)?

You could even try a Vienna/Aurora mix with ale yeast and get something like an English bitter
