Can anyone imagine this East Kent Golding Single Hop Ale?

Post #1 made 11 years ago
Hello

I want to knock up a wee 11 litre batch to try out my new minikegs. I bought some grain and hops on the cheap from Ebay and I've come up with the recipe below (using the Gregg Hughes book as a reference).

Can anyone tell me what it's likely to be like and any changes you might make? I've also got some S-33 yeast in the fridge, would that be better than US-05?

Thanks guys

Hi there hoggy :peace:,

I'm not experienced in English bitters, pale ales and I imagine this is one. I also don't have Greg Hughes book so am not sure how far your recipe varies from the original. If brewing and English type of ale though, the S-33 would be more appropriate.

Also, East Kent Goldings are not usually used for bittering hops as they are low AA% so you need more of them.

Also watch out buying cheap grain or hops. You won't know how old they are or how they have been stored. A better strategy is to ask yourself what sort of beer styles you like and want to brew, then find a 'high integrity' recipe (see the stickies in the beginners forum), scale it properly and then buy the ingredients you need.

I'd really prefer to see you working from a tried and trusted recipe first. This one just seems very odd to me. For example 36 grams of dry hops in such a small batch size seems really over the top.

Also maybe go back to your first post and edit the subject of it so it says something about the beer style you want to brew. This might get some experts in that style having a read.

Thanks for the reply, PP.

The only reason I'm making something with cheap stuff from the internet is just to have a beer to put into my minikegs for the first time. I've always bottled before now and I'm half expecting to make a mess of kegging on my first go. Normally I get all my grain and hops from the shop in town (they're great guys).

The hop additions are taken straight from the Hughes recipe for an EKG single hop ale. The grains were taken from his pale ale recipe but I think I added more Crystal because I had less of the pale malt than I needed and more of the Crystal.

I haven't had a bad recipe from the Hughes book, I can highly recommend it.

Cheers
