rdeselle,

This beer takes a little time to mature but I think it's worth it. The first time I made it I entered it in my local contest and it took a second place. The following year I reentered the few remaining bottles and it won again (second or first?) I am too lazy to look it up. I really don't think it needs that much time but I did experiment with it once and tried it weekly from my tap. It moved from rather harsh to mellow after six? weeks or so? I try to always have a keg in waiting in storage so they are mature when they go on tap. Thanks for the update.

Natdene,

Keeping a keg in reserve is a smart move. I try to always have one ready to tap. Sometimes I fall short but that's a way for me to appreciate it more. It seems a bit harsh at first but when it mellows "so do I"!

Oh man, I can't wait to try this! I brewed a batch of this a week and a half ago and plan on moving to secondary this weekend. Only difference in mine was the use of smoked malt instead of peated (my LHBS was out). Soooo.... we'll see how that turns out! I also brewed a parti-gyle batch to tide me over until the Black IPA has fully matured.

Thanks again for posting this recipe!

WilliamH,

I am happy for you! My last batch ran out last week and I have none in the fermenter yet! My fault! I don't think the smoked malt verses peated will alter heaven too much! Let me know how it tasted after the mellowing is over!

CheeseMoney,

This recipe was conceived with immersion chilling in mind. I do not alter recipes when no chilling. I don't change recipes for BIAB verses (old fashioned) 3V. I don't adjust for N/C or immersion either. All of these would take some sort of math to do! I don't bother with anything that involves math or work! I am a lazy bugger! Brew it and you will not be sorry! :drink: :drink:

I bottled this brew about a month ago and I couldn't wait any longer so I opened it up and tried it last Saturday (while brewing a saison). Oh. My. Gosh. ... This beer is incredible! In. Cred. Ib. ALL. My wife tried it (who has a very refined taste in beer/wine) and was also blown away. She said it's one of her favorite beers hands down! I'm already dreading how fast this one's going to get consumed.

Thanks for the recipe! This is definitely a beer I'll be brewing regularly. I never want to run out!

I bottled my version of this last week. Haven't tasted it yet, but my hop(e)s aren't the best.

My electric wortboiler (2000w) stopped boiling after 15 minutes and wouldn't start again. I tried to bypass the thermostat without any luck.. Threw in my 800w grill-charcoal-lighter but it couldn't bring the 25 litres back to boil. I'd still followed the hop schedule and pitched it the following day....

Anyhow, I'll make a new effort in a couple of months when the fermenting temperature (indoor) is better. I found out that the boiler had an overheating safety that was faulty, so that issue is fixed..

Since all of you praise this brew so much I just have to brew it under perfect circumstances.

Bob,

Is the recipe as posted by rdeselle a fair approximation of what you generally do for your Black IPA?
Here is the recipe as I see it:

**************************************

11.5 lbs Common 2 row
1 lb Peated Malt
1 lb Briese Extra Special
1 lb Briese Midnight Wheat
1 lb Caramel 120L
1 lb Biscuit
.5 lb Carapils
1.5 lbs Table Sugar (added at flame out)

Mash 154F

Hops: (Taken from NB recipe online)
1 oz. Summit (60 min)
1 oz. Chinook (15 min)
1 oz. Centennial (10 min)
1 oz. Cascade (5 min)
1 oz. Centennial (0 min)

Dry Hops:
1 oz. Cascade

Yeast:
Safale US-05 Ale Yeast or Wyeast 1272 American Ale Yeast II.

2trout,

That is about it. The hops are interchangeable as long as they are "C" type. I let the beer sit a few weeks because it gets better with aging (hops wise).

I did a test BIABacus a while back. I don't use software when brewing so it may not be filled out correctly? But the ingredients are OK I guess?

Just remember Bob, copying you is the most serious form of flattery there is
I have been looking for the Brew that will "Break my Cherry" so to speak, and this looks like it is it Vet Brother.
Now to get my BIABacus written, loaded, and checked by the professionals here on this site :salute:
Thank you all for your contributions to this thread.

OkieSeaPig, :salute:

Thanks, I am brewing that beer again next week! It's a staple and I can't keep it in stock. I want to mess around with some other Black IPA's but I like it to much. I can't help with BIABacus questions so someone else will have to help you with that? Enjoy the beer and it changes with time so if you let it mellow a little the initial hard edge of the hops will be less sharp. :salute:

Honestly Bob-
The way the guys set up the program, even a moron like myself can do it.
Besides, I am just taking your advice and getting the recipe off the NB web site and plugging it in....Big Cheater

Or I might "Attempt" to copy your Bear Recipe.
My biggest problem right now is I live so far from a LHBS, I am probably going to have to buy the goodies on-line. :idiot:
Maybe I will just have to start one in my small town

OkieSeaPig,

No problem cheating! I have been using many of their recipes but buying (most) of my supplies from the local store. I like to support our local stores if I can. Sometimes I buy a thing or two from NB to ease my guilt. They sell a lot of recipes (kits) I have bought a few. The sell them and measure the feed back and results (resale to the same customer) If they are good they stay. If they don't sell they drop them. They add enough that I will never do them all because I do lots of repeats.

Keep you head down. But a sharp eye out for trouble! :salute:

I would really like to use a local place but found out today that I will not be flying into OKC until late, so my first visit to my first Local Shop will have to wait I guess.
11" of snow today. Bad weather keeps the bad guys inside though :shoot:

Post #69 made 11 years ago
OkieSeaPig,

I remember the waiting. Except I was waiting for the monsoon to end. I was hot and damp you have cold and snow! War is hell! Come home safe and soon! You will be brewing soon enough but I know you will give the family the love first! Seems unfair! Family before beer? Sometimes life is backwards!
