Pike Place Space Needle Golden Anniversary IPA (clone)

Just kegged this brew. I was going to brew several weeks ago but life intervened, so I did the brew day on May 10. I've been trying to duplicate this brew, and missed the hop bill a bit on my last try. This one seems to be somewhat closer to the original - maybe even right on the spot, after it has conditioned.

Special Instructions/Notes on this Beer

Dry hops added when the yeast was pitched, all in a bag. Bag of hops stayed in for 8 days until I racked to bottling vessel for final settling. Kegged today and took a taste when I did the FG reading. After I tasted I poured the rest of the brew from the hydrometer cylinder into a pint glass and sat back and fully enjoyed it. Man, this is some GOOD beer, even before any conditioning! FG came out exactly as calculated by BIABacus - 1.016. Great rich, full mouthfeel, nice aroma. Looking forward to what it will be in a few weeks.

It appears that it may turn out to be my best brew, ever, since I started in 1993.

Looks good. Is the DME because your kettle is too small? Not that it would even matter. I would probably opt to dry hop right as fermentation activity is barely going anymore, instead of at pitching. Sounds like a great recipe though. The name "Pike Place" makes me want it to be a Black IPA. Maybe some huskless carafa, cold steeped, would be an optical illusion.

(Wow - that was an old message thread!)

The DME was to boost the gravity a bit from what was calculated, and also because I had an extra bit of DME hanging around that I wanted to use. I could have added some additional 2-row and kept close to the same profile. The grain bill and strike water all fit the kettle but I do have to watch it a little as I get the grain in (BIABacus warns of approaching kettle limit). I did have a few inches of headroom, and no problem with the boil.

The "Pike Place" name is from the street here in Seattle, WA. A brewery there (Pike Brewing Company) won a competition to brew a beer for the 50th Anniversary of the Space Needle, from the 1962 World's Fair. In digging around a little I found what was supposed to be a clone recipe of that brew. This batch is long gone, but it was darn close to what I was trying to duplicate. Very clean, very drinkable. Used 5 different Washington state hops, and I was able to talk with the original brewer and get a few tips about the hop additions. This one is somewhat lighter color than most IPA's, but the hops mix gave me a very tasty and balanced brew. I'll have to do another batch, I think - but I have a few others in line first, so maybe next spring.

Austin? My wife and I have become involved with the new Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery here in Seattle, and some of our members had a lot of interaction with the fine folks at Austin's Black Star Co-op Pub and Brewery while we were getting going (our grand opening was August 15 - as the first fully licensed co-op brewery in Washington state). We have a CDA on tap now - a Cascadia Dark Ale, a sort of black IPA. Very tasty, and extremely well-balanced - not an 'in-your-face' typical hoppy Northwest IPA!
