Cascade Mountains West Coast Imperial IPA

Post #1 made 12 years ago
This will be my first IPA brew. I can't wait.

Does anyone see any issues? Any recommendations? Changes?

Thanks
Robert

EDIT: Changed my recipe since my original post. Lowered the OG to bring down the ABV%.
Also, Molly noticed in his post below that the HOP Bill is not coping into the Recipe Report. I have manually added that here.

Maybe PP will what is going on.

I can't comment on the hop side, as nothing is showing, but the malt looks ok (but a BIG beer)!
Hope you have a big enough starter for this one!

Molly,

Made a small change to my recipe after thinking about the ABV on this one. Also manually added the hop bill as for some reason it is not
coping from the BIABacus. :headhit:

rdeselle,

I've never brewed an Imperial IPA so I did a quick search. Check this out, you may want to up you grain bill with the amount of hops you've got going.
The grain bill for an Imperial IPA is very similar to the grain for an IPA, it's just bigger. Even though many people call it a 'double' IPA, the amount of grain is more like 1.5 times as much. So while a typical IPA might use 11 pounds of grain for 5 gallons, an Imperial IPA will use about 17 pounds. Standard American 2-row should be used for 85% to 90% of the total grain bill.
I found it here. http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2012/07/h ... l-ipa.html

Its an interesting piece. Has a bunch of hints in there, as well as a link to his recipe.

Trout,

I lowered the OG from the original recipe to bring down the ABV. That is the reason the grain bill went down. I think I will just leave it as the original recipe has it and be done with it. My next brew with be a lower ABV IPA.

I only mentioned the starter because it seemed like a big beer.
Just check your yeast pitching rate (if you don't already).

e.g.
5.5G at 1.055 = 211 Billion cells required (2.2 packs no starter)
5.5G at 1.085 = 320 Billion cells required (3.3 packs no starter)

rdeselle.. don't know where you are located. I'm not familiar with Rahr 2 row.. I always use American 2 Row. Also, the MO % is a bit high for me.

2trout is correct.. Imperials are much bigger.. so, IMO, this beer will be an IPA.. but not an Imperial.. but, that's just my opinion.

As a for instance.. in Brewing Classic Styles, Jamil uses about:
85% Am. 2 Row
5% Munich.. I also like M.O.
8% Crystal 15L
2% Crystal 40L

You didn't mention what yeast you plan on using.. US-05 or WLP001.. forget what the Wyeast is.. maybe 1056.
I think the hop schedule will work fine

@hbgbill, according to the Northern Brewer recipe they are calling for
Wyeast # 1272 American Ale II Yeast. MY LHB only carries White labs so I will have to find the equivelent.

Still being new to brewing, especially when trying to stay within a specific style, should I be using the specs from the original recipe? Or modify it based on style?

Putting the numbers from the recipe into the BIABacus shows even NB is only using 67% 2 row.
Unless I change the OG of the recipe, I don't see I can get the numbers to come out closer to 85% 2 row based on the style guidlines.

@Mally, yeah I really won't have time to create a big enough starter so I had planned on getting 3 vials of yeast. More money but so be it

numbers I gave you should give you an OG of 1.065 w/ a FG of about 1.012 Well within the IPA guidelines

AmIPA.. OG: 50-75 and FG: 10-18

whereas.. Imperials are.. OG: 1.75- 1.090 with a FG: 12-20
