Grainbill cascadian apa

Post #1 made 12 years ago
Have pale ale malt, munich, caramel malt, pils and wheat malt at home. Will hop with chinook, centennial and cascade. Around 50-60 ibus. Abv around 5%. Want to be able to drink in front of telly without getting smashed Want 25 litres in the fv.

I like a bit of maltyness. I know some say hoppy beers should have less malt flavour but better for me if they compliment each other. Too boring malt bill and i could as well drink grapefruit juice

Suggestions for a nice grainbill would be much appreciated!

What have you brewed previously? What have you liked/disliked?
You could do a SMaSH (Sinlgle Malt & Single Hop), or use the whole lot in a mixed bag recipe.

Have you looked through the recipe section, anything grab you there?

I have the hop bill covered. Actually liked a single malt munich bitter ale i made. Think that would be too malty for an ipa/apa. I like brewdog's punk but want just a little more maltyness. I know some guys got rave reviews for a dipa with 50/50 Munich and pils malt. Very unconventional. Not sure about copying it. I want a mixed grainbill with some balance. Golden colour. I am thinking 40% pils or pale ale, 30% Munich, 5% wheat, 5% caramel. What you think? Too many ingredients?

I love punk too, but it is hard to get an exact recipe for it.
I tried a clone using 80% pale malt, 18.5% caragold, and 1.5% acidulated. hops are Nelson Sauvin, Chinook, Simcoe, & Ahtanum. It was nice, but not exactly the same. They may use more dry hopping than i did, plus i couldn't get Ahtanum at the time so substituted with cascade?

If you want maltiness have you tried melanoidin malt? I have some but haven't had a chance to use it yet.

What you mentioned doesn't sound bad at all to me though. I would be tempted to try it and see, I am sure it will be a great beer. :luck:

I'm not smart enough to analyze a recipe.. but a few comments.

You can have a ton of maltiness as long as it's balanced with a ton of happiness. CPA is a NA west coast IPA.. usually with a lot of hop bitterness, taste and aroma. I say a ton of each.. and to give a for instance, I had a few days that I went down for my annual Pliny The Younger at Russian River Brewery. That beer is big on alcohol, hops and malt character.. but the key is it's balances so beautifully it's like heaven. That said, this is, according to your description, an APA, whereas Cascadian is a dark IPA. Sounds like you are want an APA which is lower in each. As a thought, you might want to add a bit of Vienna to the grist. It'll add another dimension.

This is a pretty new style.. Just being recognized by the BJCP.. unfortunately, not as a Cascadian.. :( However, you might check THIS. Pretty dern good write-up. Good luck with it
